I got an email from Amazon with an offer to subscribe for $12.00 a year.
Those of you who get it is it worth 12 bucks? Let me know what you think. Thanks in advance. |

I did and I no longer subscribe. Just didn't find it as worthwhile for equipment reviews, how tos, etc. I'd read it if it was free.

Unfortunately, many of the US photo magazines are unabashed shills for the gear manufacturers and retailers. When Popular Photography had more advertising sections than content was when I quit subscribing. About the only decent US photography magazine anymore is Outdoor Photographer.
If you want good, colorful photo magazines, then read the UK magazines. The only problem with them is their high price in the US.

I stopped my subscription about 2 years ago. IMO best use of Shutterbug is if you are buying or selling equipment. By looking at the classifieds, you can get a good idea what the market is.

Still subscribe to it but will not renew. I would see a promising title in the table of contents on lighting techniques, for example, only to discover that they push a certain product. As another example, there was something that sounded like coverage of marketing techniques, turned out to be an interview with a founder of some service who insistently advertised its advantages... Too sponsor-driven.
My thumbs up are for Rangefinder, to name just one.

I thought I was getting it for free as a prize but later felt like it could be available for free, too. It is related to WPPI, a wonderful organization. Rangefinder is filled with inspiring stories, philosophy of photography, reviews, news, tips, and lots of useful advices. In fact, I owe this magazine for my photography mental restructuring some time ago. There is some advertising material, of course, but the articles encompass broader areas than Shutterbug's. That is not to say that Rangefinder is the only serious option.

I have shutterbug sub. It is only 12$ so I could not pass it up. I have about a quarter through my subscription. I like the mag but there are alot of ads in it. You cannot go wrong for 12$.

I bought a couple of issues of ShutterBug off the rack and wasn't all that impressed.
+1 for Rangefinder though.

I did Shutterbug and Popular Photography for my first 2 years then realized 1 year would have been enough. I think they have value for people just starting out, and Shutterbug for the ads at times, but anybody even a bit beyond novice is more advanced than they are.

i just checked out rangefinder & sister pub http://www.aftercapture.com/ and found LOTS of useful articles for free!
