SInce you asked, here's an update. We found some one who would pay $400ish for the carcass, so we sold it to him. No idea what he ended up doing with it.

Before we sold it, I researched the laws in California about dynamite and other high explosives and decided that it's not such a good idea. :P

Actually, if you could get the water out of it, it would make quite a nice decoration (for those who like their cameras) and a great conversation piece.

Not sure if I could go as high as $400 for a 'display unit' though

I think I'd pay that for a display item; as it's about 5% of it's retail value. A $7600 lens has to have a salvage value of more than $400!

It is actually a relative bargain, it's just my spirit is willing but wallet is weak(er)

I wonder whether my local Canon Service Center, whose track record and quality of service is magnificent, would actually consider drying one out - just remove some of the glass, wipe off the excess water, and reassemble, for a fee. Just dry it out, no need to restore it to serviceable status as long as the cosmetics look great and the water is gone so it doesn't corrode further.

They're really not that hard to work on if you have the right tools. A spanner tool is a MUST when pulling the elements out. Also, a good screwdriver set and a ESD kit will do wonders.

I've opened up and repaired the following Canon gear...no service manuals.

28-70 2.8L EF
70-200 2.8L EF IS
70-200 2.8L EF
75-300 4 to 5.6
28-80
80-200 2.8L
85 1.2L EF
1D
1D mark II
10D (fairly easy!)
24 1.4L EF
50 2.5 macro

And no, I don't work at a service center. I just take my time on opening up the lenses. And they're all working and happy now!

$400 for a carcass is cheap if the lens hood is included.

If I'm not mistaken, just the hood for the Canon 400/500/600mm is something like $500 if you need to replace it!

Correct! The 600 f4 hood runs a cool $598.95 @ B&H!

I thought I remember the rental company selling off the lens case/trunk and hood, but maybe I'm mistaken.

Hey, At least it was a Canon L and not a Nikkor..heres the sales pitch!

"The bright white paint on all the Canon L series Super Telephoto Lenses allow them to be rapidly located in case of accidental plunging into deep water*, This gives us a substantial advantage over our competitors products using a matte black finish"

*Note weathersealing is not adequate to withstand full submersion in liquids however
