Default NYC trip - March

Hey. I'm going on a trip to New York from march 1st-5th. I was wondering if any of you NYC potners had any inside advice on things to do while in the city. Its not my first time, but I am bringing along my girlfriend who has only been out of florida once in her life (and that was to colorado when she was like 5). Im doing the usual statue of liberty, central park, emipre state building, top of the rock, times square, rockefeller center ice skating, the museums, etc.

Is there anything that you would consider a must see, do, or take a photo of?

This isnt only for NYC potners, if youve been and know of something that is a must in NYC (or even Long island) please share! Im trying to make the best out of this trip, even though its in march

Thanks!

Coney Island boardwalk? Being from Florida, the beach won't be so impressive (especially in the cold!) but it's a pretty neat place.

Take the tram over to Roosevelt Island to slow the pace a little, (the one that the Green Goblin attacks in the Spiderman movie ) I got some good city shots from there & it was good chill out time.
Same with walking over the Brooklyn Bridge back into Manhattan.

And you'll see a film crew somewhere just about every day so you can "spot the celeb".
Tiffany's on 57th & 5th ? ................. but you may come out of there with your girlfriend smiling & your wallet cryin'

There is a charge for the "tram", but your Metro card covers it, the trip only takes about 4 minutes.
I also liked the views from the Battery on the south of the island. And Union Square, (where there was a bomb scare as we arrived)

I was there with my son around last Easter, caught a hockey game at the M S Garden, which started with the fastest KO ever of a player when a fight started 19 seconds into the game.

For me I also "had" to do the "tourist" stuff, Chrysler Building, Grand Central Station, Rockerfeller, Manny's & Sam Ash music stores, Chinatown (DON'T buy the cheap trainers/sneakers there, all fake!) the MoMA, the Flat Iron; as well as all the places mentioned so far.
A real blast for me was having friends who had lived in NYC all their lives so knew where to go; and a month before I went I'd seen a singing duo from the village play the small town where I live & by complete coincidence bumped into (literally) one of them in Manny's.

By then I'd got used to my new Canon, so I got some shots which I'm really happy with, from Central park, The Empire State & a squirrel on Roosevelt Island which you can hardly tell I was jogging after as I shot it cos it kept running away.

for the Statue of Liberty...are you just going to Battery Park or are you going out to Ellis Island? last time i was in NYC i took the free ferry to Staten Island to get some shots of the statue of liberty because my friends didn't want to pay to go to Ellis island, and that worked. haha

Maybe kinda out of the way, but try the Bronx Zoo.

Plus, you're going for 5 days...might as well fulfill your dream of going to B&H on 34th & 9th. It's a techie's dream place...oh, and great for photography lovers too! Look, but don't buy. Shipping is cheaper than the tax.

Another place, for photography would be a hidden treasure...it's the 'Cloisters' on the upper west side, beyond riverside dr. You'd have to take a car, cab, or bus there. The exhibit, from what I remember, is not open on Mondays. I found out the hard way (DOH!), and will be back there, once I go back 'home.'

Of course, you could always go to Riverside dr. and check out the GWB (George Washington Bridge) and enjoy a nice walk (pending you park around the Riverside Dr. area).

South St. Sea Port also rings a bell. Always loved to hate the East River. Maybe travel to the UN building, on a leisurely walk up the FDR Drive. You can also catch a glimpse of the big 'ole 'Pepsi-Cola' neon billboard.

Ride the subways. Go from Grand Central, take ANY subway that goes to 14th St. You'll be in Union Sq., which is where NYU is, and the subways are SAFE. People from Florida have NO idea how 'cool' it is, to ride the subways. It's like something you cannot describe to them...and trust me, now that I live in FL, I know...hehe.

What else...Broadway shows (kinda pricey, if you are on a budget); If you like hot-dogs, visit Grey's Papaya, on 72nd and B'way, or 8th st. 8th st. will put you into the thick of Soho...awesome old town feel, with brick pavers, on the st.

I'll think of more. Out on the Island, of course, u have Jones Beach, but, try to make it to the Cross Island Pkwy. There are 'pull-off' zones, where you can park, and enjoy the view of the water. There's always Shelter Island/Montauk, but, that's a ways away (depending on where on the island u are). There's lots of clubs, on the island, though...so, if u are in the mood to boogie, listen to the local radio stations for the parties.

Hope that helps. And sometimes I miss it, other times, I don't. NY, that is...hehe.

Take the C train to Brooklyn. Walk back into Manhattan over the Brooklyn Bridge (take pictures) then walk over to Canal street (or take a $6 cab) and she can shop for some stuff. She'll love you for that.

Could head down to Katz's Deli on the corner of Ludlow and Houston Streets for a nice pastrami on rye or Carnegie Deli at 55th Street and 7th Ave. There's an orchid show 2/23 - 4/06 at the Bronx Botanical Garden; tickets are $20/adults. While you're in Chinatown, might as well hit Little Italy as well. Take a ride over to the Brooklyn Heights Promenade for some good night shots of the city skyline/Brooklyn Bridge. Could also visit the American Museum of Natural History along w/ the Rose Center/Space Show/IMAX movies. Could also try to get tickets to the Letterman or Leno shows and finally, if you're already in the Coney Island area, you could head to the Brooklyn Aquarium.
