Monolights are the best choice in most cases. They are light, can be moved around easy, the flash themselves don't put off more than a burst of heat (the modeling light can get hot), will last for years and you can use a lot of different types of light modifiers on them (umbrellas, softboxes, light panels, etc.).
Continuous lights, be they cold (floresent) or hot (high wattage photo floods) are good in that what you see is what you get. They are not so great in that the hot lights put off a lot of heat. Heat that can not only make a room hot, but you have the possiblity of putting something on fire or burning someone if it falls on them or it is touched while on. Cold lights don't have this problem, but they also don't put out the light that monolights and hot lights can put out. This might not be a problem or it might be. There are a lot of choices out there. What ever you buy, you will want to look at the options, sizes, how many add-ons you can get for them, cost, power, etc. If you are going to be shooting day after day after day, White Lighting would be a good choice. If you are only going to be shooting maybe on weekends or the occasional evening, then the Alien Bees, Photogenic or the SP Excalibur line are good choices to look at. Mike |
