I have a woman who wants to order a 8x10 portrait-orientation print. The problem is that it was taken as a landscape-orientation closeup of the baby's head and shoulders. Cropping it to 8x10 portrait brings it right to the edges of his face, almost like a mugshot. It doesn't look right. I e-mailed her a proof of what the 8x10 portrait would look like and she wants it "not zoomed in so much." I'm having a heck of a time explaining to her why this won't work.
Is there a site somewhere that shows images as examples of why this will/won't work on certain images and will explain it easily to her (and other clients who don't seem to get it)? (It looks really great cropped square... maybe she'll take that instead!)

Maybe show her a proof where the width is ok but at that point I'm sure there will be a white band on top and bottom cause there is no picture left. Maybe she will understand it at that point.

Might be worth making up some "frames" that correspond to the various aspect ratios of your proofs. Then print the proof "full frame" and the customers can see what they'll get in the different print sizes.

Simply tell her that if you "zoom out" there will be white space boxes at the bottom and top of the picture. She will end up with something that's closer to a square print - I'm guessing - as opposed to the desired 8x10 rectangle.
I agree about the square crop Kim - with the right photo it can be very unique and attractive. Good luck and let us know how she reacts. - Stu |
