Default Mayday Parade- Buffalo, Ny

Mayday Parade at Xtreme Wheelz in Buffalo. Bad taste in my mouth from this venue now.

Well, I had to fight to get into the venue tonight. I wasn't put on "the list" again. Unfortunately the owner of the venue was "unavailable". After proving I wasn't a joke (had to show him my photo pass collection) he reluctantly let me in. I saw the owner later and told her I had trouble getting in and she was rude and walked off. But, if i want to shoot there anymore I wont be a jerk about it.

First my perennial complaint: I'd like like to see a wide shot of the stage and lighting to get a sense of place. You seem to have captured the emotion of the concert but the images are uniformly dark and two thirds hide the faces.

I'm curious as to what the interest is in shooting at a place where you are disrespected? Are you paid for your images there? Is it an unusually good venue? Are you desperate to build a portfolio? I am fortunate that I no longer have to put up with abuse but I empathize with you and am curious as to the conditions that lead you to do this.

First off, I know they are dark. They have 2 can lights lighting the stage...makes it difficult. And faces are covered anyways cause their hair is always in front of it...haha. I was thinking of next time setting up a yellow geled flash in the back of the room. Give me a little extra light without being obnoxious OR making it look like a flash was used in the pics

Thats as wide as i got. I should bring a step ladder or something to be able to see above the back of the crowd (some of us don't have sweet pelican cases to stand on :PP...wish i did though).

and for your second part--
None of the above. I shoot there cause I like a lot of the bands. Get in for free and get to take pictures of music I like. Why not? Saves me 15 bucks. Also, it keeps me in practice for when the summer concert season comes and I actually do get paid.

All makes sense. One thing you might try is to mount your camera on a monopod with a cable release and hold it above the crowd, maybe with that sweet little fisheye on it!? I think a gelled flash would be a useful addition in this lighting situation.

So why did you have trouble getting in? You say you weren't on the list again but was this set up through a label/publicist? Did you not have contact info for the band with you? Definitely don't want to make enemies with the clubs. I always make sure to bring with me my confirmation and have contact information.

Ive shot the venue 5 times before, just have a running arangement with the owner of the venue. She wasn't there for some reason after she said it was ok. I just dont see how I can show a press pass for the publication I work for (not for this shoot but shush) and the publicist says no. idk

Hahaha...i know. The people in the front row are too busy trying not to get squished between the crowd of people and the metal railing. Also, that scene of people are just that...scene. Smiling wouldnt be "cool".
