I am trying to switch from a 20D to either a 40D or 5D. Need some input on what everyone thinks. I want to mainly shoot sports for kids, (motorcross, football, lacrosse etc.) I also have a baby on the way so need to shoot her also. Also wondering what lense to purchase for sporting events reading alot of reviews getting alot of different answers. I am an ametuer and still learning.

I have a 20D and a 5D and love the combination. If I were to do it now, I might look at the 40D and wait for the new 5D (
?) and see what that brings for my next body. I do not consider the 5D a great sports body - the 20D is better, I use a 70-200IS L 2.8 for soccer and it does pretty well until they get close to me or way on the other side of the field.HAve fun

Mainly sports? I have to begrudgingly say that the 40D is probably the better choice, as it has a better AF system...though there's really nothing wrong with your 20D, especially if you're just an amateur.
But the 5D is so much better of a camera than the 40D, and the much larger viewfinder + excellent AI servo when the invisible AF points are enabled would still make it my choice for general stuff by a mile. But since you focus specifically on sports...the 40D is a good call. Though if you can afford a 5D, you could always splurge for a 1DII; about the same price as the 5D on the used market and far superior to the 40D for sports.

id say 40d... you loose some reach with lens's that youd use for sports with a 5d.
save the extra you would spend. |

40D.
I love the 5D but if you shoot almost nothing but sports the 40D is a better value.
