I'm kissing arse
|
I had the opportunity to do a photo session for a company that will use my images in nationwide print and web promotions. They have been specific as to what they wanted, up to now. They want 2 CD's. One for print and one for web. I had asked for exact dimensions. For instance 4x6" at 72dpi, but they won't give me specifics. Anyway, what would be the best dimensions and quality for both print and web? I have an idea, but wanted some confirmation.

I'm going to try to answer this as best as I can..
Web Use: In regards to actual dimensions I would just leave it as the original - let them crop it how they see fit. 72dpi would be sufficient and is the standard acceptable dpi for web usage. For Print: Generally the client specifies the dimensions so that you can crop it properly, although if they are not giving you that info, then I guess just throw the High res TIFF files onto a CD and you're done. That's at least what I would do, hope this helps

I used to work at a printing company that did high end digital promo printing for major companies. If the company you are working for just wants the pictures then I am sure they are using a graphic designer that will put all pictures together for their adds. The graphic designer should be making all of the adjustments to the images as far as size and res.
As for the Web images. I would agree with Zvon. Leave them original and mark them all down to 72 dpi. The same would go for the web graphics. Whoever is adding these to the web page will make all the adjustments. |

You really need to know what type of printing they are talking about. If you are supplying images for general photographic prints then I always crop to size at 300 dpi (specifically speaking to the 4x6 mentioned here). If the customer is talking a using the images in brochures etc. then it is most likely going to have to be converted to CMYK. This trickier than just doing a conversion and you should read up on the best way to accomplish this without losing any of the punch in your colors. A straight conversion from RGB to CMYK can quite often lead to muted colors.
I crop all of my images to size when printing and I do all of these at 300dpi and only after around 16x20 will I start to lower that value.

Any time I've shot for ad use I provide full image 72ppi for web and 300ppi for print. I let the client's design agency work out the exact crop that works for the ad layout. I also only provide RBG and leave the CYMK conversion to them. There are experts in that, I'm not.
