Default New to HDR

I just started experimenting with HDR imaging. I bought the photomatix which seems to be a good program, however, I am struggling a little with the details of it. How do you make an image look smooth? (almost like a painting). Also, once you combine your three images into the HDR image, should the image look enhanced or pretty close to the original. My tone mapping has 2 pages, tone enhancer and tone compressor which process separately. Should I be doing both ? I probably sound like a stumbling idiot but I'm very interested in HDR imaging and want to figure out what I'm doing wrong. I got lucky on my first try and made an ok image but now I can't reproduce whatever I did. Any tips would be helpful.. thx

I only use detail enhancer.

The main sliders you should look out for is Strength, Light smoothing, luminosity, micro smoothing and micro contrast. I also tweak the white and black point different for every image.

The way I learned was through this site:
http://www.vanilladays.com/hdr-guide/

and through trial and error. Have a muck around with the program and see what the different things do.

I keep reading about HDR .... does Photoshop CS2 provide this ability? or is a separate software package required?
