I'm wondering if you can set the 40d 2sec/10sec self-timer to kept taking shots. Not just a single picture??

Welcome to POTN. It's not possible with the timer on the 40D, but there are a number of available timer remotes that will do the job. Canon's TC-80N3 is the best (and most expensive) solution and the device I use for interval photos. Others have found less expensive options on EBay, but I cant speak to them as I haven't used them.
