The 120-300 is better.
More useful having a zoom. The typical drawback of a zoom against a prime is the sharpness, but I've seen comparisons between the Sigma 300mm and the 120-300, and ironically the 120-300 came out better. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...d.php?t=136303 Lots of examples on last page |

Everyone (I know of) says the 120-300 is sharper than their own 300.

Amusingly enough Sigma managed to more or less kill off sales of their own 300mm f/2.8 prime when they released the 120-300mm f/2.8 zoom... Perhaps that's why Canon won't release any wide aperture telephoto zooms? Anyway, I digress. The 120-300mm is the better buy of the two.

Oh Lord... I hear this all the time. Within a few grams it weighs the same as the Canon 300mm f/2.8 so it weighs pretty much what it should weigh as a 300/2.8 lens. In fact if you follow the "wisdom" regarding zooms versus primes spouted by the armchair experts on this forum it should be a lot heavier...
A 300/2.8 needs a lot of glass and glass is heavy... |

I agree, heavy is all relative. Once you hand hold 500mm f4, 300mm f2.8 is nothing. Most people using 120-300mm f2.8 or the 300mm f2.8 for sports are using monopods.

sorry, I misunderstood, I thought you ask Canon 300 2.8 or Sigma 120-300 2.8. That is a different question.
I heard very different opinion about 120-300 quality, and that is a little annoyance. |
