Question Large CF Cards & SD Cards (Question)

I shoot everything from sports to weddings and am a little nervous about loosing images on a large card (a lot to loose) 16G
The other point that I have heard is that alot of the time, problems are from changing cards, and the less you have to open, remove, replace, the less chance of problems.
What are your thoughts?

My concern is keeping the number of photos on a card manageable; around 200-250 seems enough. For my cameras, that's 4 GB, which conveniently makes a nice DVD backup too.

Well, that is one way to look at it. But you can also worry about losing cards (if you have several) or bending a pin in the camera while you are changing cards. My solution was to go with two large cards in my 1DsIII. That way if one corrupts I have another but I dont have to change cards or carry spares. Of course that only works with 1-series bodies.

i've never had a card fail but i only use sandisk. i use 8-gig cards which gives me about 500 files on my 1d mark III.

I use CF card to catch RAWs and the SDHC for JPEGs. Thus, I use a 8GB CF and 4GB SD. The CF holds 300 RAWs and the SD hold 400 or so JPEGs. If you do the same then select the largest card for RAWs. If you put the same on both cards then I would get two of the same size cards.

Thank Mebailey, never looked at it that way. Just a quick queastion, My camera will hold and use 16G cf & 16G sd right? Wast reading some of the 1ds cameras would not take the 16G sd cards only 12G. My camera is a 1Ds mark2. Just want to make sure!

Iam pretty sure 1DsII will take SDHC (16G) with a recent firmware update 1.1.6 which was available in Dec 2007 from Canon website.1.1.61.1.61.1.6

On mine it says "card containing firmware is required to update" I guess that means my camera will not take them until it is updated? Is it easy to do?

Was there enough info there to answer your questions?

If you haven't got firmware 1.1.6 on your camera, you're limited to whatever the version you do have will support. What the statement "card containing firmware is required to update" means is that you must load the firmware (the *.fir file; goes on the card's root directory) onto a recognized card (generally recommended to be under 2 GB, but this may well be for legacy reasons) in order to perform the upgrade. You can't upgrade via a cable connection.
