For those that keep up with this...early last year (2007) Canon announced the Mark III and the 40D. Even after the announcement it was not until Oct/Nov did the large distributors like B&H have the camera. I know many of the pro shooters had the camera earlier (who is their source), but for the general consumer it seemed to be 9 months after the announcement. So even if Canon announced a new camera today, how long would it take someone to really have the opportunity to get one?

That's not correct, the 40D was announced in July and deliveries started just a couple of weeks later, I had mine mid August. The 1D mkIII is another story as it usually is with the pro models.
