Canon 17-105mm f2.8 IS
Just in time for Christmas 2008. A brand new lens for those 1.6 crop factor cameras and a solid wedding lens for full frame units. Last edited by chikabelley : 7th of May 2008 (Wed) at 08:10. |

If real that would be sweet.

If real, it would cost $1500-1600 and would most assuredly be an EF-S lens.

f2.8 would be nice on such a lens but would make it very big, heavy and expensive.
I'd really like to see a EF-S 17-125mm f4 IS USM. It could be a perfect travel lens. However, given it's "superzoom-ish" characteristics it would probably be either very expensive or very bad. On the other hand: If Canon could build a decent successor for the 17-85 with less wide-angle distortions, less CAs and better corner sharpness, I'd be happy as well. |

How is that a wedding lens? It's slow and will not remotely come close to the image quality of a couple fast primes.

Well we've got the 24-105 4L IS for full frame. Such a lens as the OP suggests would not likely be FF, and if it were it would be rather spendy.

This lens, if destined for a full frame camera would most definitely be 82mm threaded and weigh at least as much as the 24-70L.
Then again...it would be a blast to use as a street zoom.

Especially if mated up to a 5D mkII that goes up to 25,600 ISO! Can't wait to see what the fall brings us from Canon...

This type of lens is something I've dreamed about. I would save my pennies and get one no matter the cost. I would settle for f/4 though.

i wonder how big and heavy an f/2.8 lens with this focal range would be. my guess is that it would be pretty big and heavy. would probably be happier with a 17-70 f/2.8 IS or even an f/4 IS.

rdc640: Thats a really mean thing to say, this is even in the right section and your still slamming him.
Watch out for the Mod-Squad they dont like that kind of language either :P I dont see why such a lens would be so far fetched. Hell I just want a 24-105mm f2.8 IS. I would only need three lenses in my case then 16-35mm F2.8 II 24-105mm f2.8 IS 70-200mm f2.8 IS w00t

Yeah, but with that move (17-105 2.8 is), canon would knock out 3 of its 5 best zoom lenses - 17-40, 24-70 and 24-105...I don't see it happening...
