Do you think Canon (or 3rd party) is likely to make an Image Stabalised Macro lens?
Nikon has one, the 105mm VR. The Canon EF 100mm 2.8 macro is on my wish list. At the moment i'm having to rely on Kenko Extension Tubes with my 70-300mm IS. It works very well apart from the light fall off and the ridiculously short DOF. I have to say the IS is almost a necessity with this setup. I realise that shutter speeds are low due to the light fall off from the tubes but i may wish to use tubes with a dedicated macro lens too. With most of my macro work it's not possible to use a tripod either. I think Canon are behind Nikon in this respect. An IS 100mm macro lens - I'd pay more for that!

I think eventually, yes, it'll happen. I'd love to see IS on a macro lens. Ultimately, I'd like to get a ring flash, which would ultimately negate the need for IS, but for natural light macros, it would be great. Canon and Nikon have kind of been going back and forth, copying their strengths (Canon's recent improvement in their wide angle lineup, the introduction of the 200 f/2 IS, and Nikon's VR superteles and tilt shift lenses.)
However, Canon still has a unique fixture in the DSLR world - the 65 MP-E. I was out shooting a few weeks ago and was talking shop with a Nikon shooter, and when we both started doing some macro shooting, he started talking about adapting the 65 MP-E for Nikon, and how he wishes he could use it. I suggested he buy a 10D or 20D and a 65 MP-E and it would be about the same as any conversion or such, and he said he'd probably do that....

Don't expect IS to help you much when shooting at actual macro distances. The blur you normally see in photography comes from rotational shake effects which cause large translation of the image on the sensor. IS combats that shake mode. At macro distances, direct translation of the camera itself (side to side, fore aft, up down) all cause blur as well. IS cannot correct this type of shaking.
If Canon added IS to the 100/2.8 it would be handy for the times one wants to use it as a short telephoto more than anything. It will not free macro shooters from flash rigs and tripods.

I have a knack of buying lenses jsut before they get uprated by Canon.
I got a 70-200 f/4, and within 2 months the IS version came out. I got a 100mm macro lens about 2 months ago..... So it stands to reason that there will be a 100mm f/2.8 IS macro sooner rather than later, after all Canon has to keep up with Nikon, even if the lens fairy didn't snitch on me this time round...

No wonder I couldn't find this thread it's been moved lol.
I found about the user CP I hadn't thought about that Jeffrey interesting point. Steve I've been saving for the 100 f/2.8 macro and I wouldn't be surprised if an IS version appeared not long after I get it - such is the way it goes!

I feel thoroughly satisfied

Well... Nikon had a 200mm f/2 VR first, now we have a 200mm f/2 IS... I'm sure eventually we'll end up with a 100mm f/2.8 IS eventually, too

Why not do what half of every one with a Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR does....
Go buy the Canon dual element 77mm 500D filter lens for the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens? Then you not only get a great tele for use you get a descent Macro with you anytime you pack the tele. And the filter is all of what $150? If you have never owned a Macro lens VR/IS/OS is a bit useless the closer you get toward 1:1 ratio. It's most useful only at normal tele range. If you are serious about Macro you should invest in a good tripod anyway. |

macro shots are SUPPOSED to be shot WITH a tripod!!!! if you're serious about your macro shots, USE a tripod!
but then again, IS on a macro does make sense.... but seriously, it depends on how much gain canon will get out of IS on macros.

It definitely won't help with everything but it will help when using the lens under normal conditions and under moderately close range use. For true macro work nothing will replace a suitably fast shutter speed or tripod. I would definitely consider upgrading if they came out with one.

Nikon has VR (IS) on a macro - and by most reports, in the macro range, it is virtually useless. YMMV.

That's interesting to know. I guess it would only be useful on non macro stuff like portraits.
