Got my first DSLR today and I was going crazy with it earlier snapping pictures of everything. Here's one that I particularly liked. Tell me what you guys think I can improve on, I'm just a beginner...literally my first day haha!

You might want to consider less centralised composition. Perhaps rule of thirds might help you? See here:

Yes the rule of thirds helps with composition...
nice colours focus is on the yes ...try a less distracting background something that does not distract..... the fact you got down to the level of his eyes is also good....
