Default perfect LCD protector for 30D and 40D

Evidently the Nintendo DS Lite hand-held video game console has two screens of slightly different size, and surprise, surprise, they are almost exactly the same sizes as the Canon 30D and 40D LCDs! I didn't know that at the time, but standing at the checkout counter of our local department store here in northern Japan I saw a display for some screen protectors for the Nintendo DS Lite and thought I'd give them a try. Only 620 Yen (US$6.00) for a packet of two, one of each size: 68x52.8mm and 62x46.4mm. I bought a couple of packages on the spot.

When I got them home, opened the package and held them up to my 30D and 40D I was very pleasantly surprised. The larger one was a perfect match to the 40D's LCD. For the 30D I had to trim about 4mm off one end of the smaller one with scissors to make it perfect.

Once I applied them to the cameras I was quite happy with the result. The protectors are very sturdy, about 8-10 mils thick. They adhered without any bubbles or creases. I haven't tried to remove one yet, but they feel like they'll come off without a lot of work, though not so easily they'd slip off during use.

Though I'm in Japan, I imagine any video game vendor will have similar screen protectors for Nintendo DS Lite. I'd definitely recommend them based on my limited use so far. Once I've tested them in the field for a few weeks, I'll report on how they hold up.

If you have any comments or questions, please let me know.

Picture #1 below shows the packaging and the two protectors still with their own plastic shields.

Picture #2 shows my 40D with one already mounted on the LCD and an unused one leaning against the camera. If you look hard at the picture you can just make out the protector on the LCD and see how well it fits - with no trimming.

Finally, picture #3 shows my 30D with its protector, also mounted, and an unused one. Look at the lower right corner of the LCD and you can see where I trimmed it. I had to take about 4mm off the right side, and round the corners.

Thanks for the info, but I have to ask: the lcd cover screen on most if not all canon cameras is user replaceable and cheap directly from canon, why bother covering it when you can just replace it for about the same cost?

Wow thanks!!
I will definitional be going to all my local Game Stops looking for these! Haha
Do these prevent smudges from your nose?? (The grease your nose leaves behind when in landscape orientation and your eye is up to the viewfinder.)

Like they said. And it's pretty darn hard to scratch.

No. If you have oily skin, it'll rub off on that just as well as it does on the factory-supplied model.

Try using your right eye.

However the supplier gave me one.

I use my right eye, and my nose still touches the LCD...
Only way I can avoid this is holding my face away from the viewfinder a bit, or by shooting in portrait orientation.

Again... My 40D doesn't seem to have come with an LCD protector, and neither did my XTi... can someone inform me about this?

Yeah, both my 40D and XTi kit never came with an LCD protector or thin clear film for that matter.

That clear panel on the back isn't the LCD. It's a separate, easily replaced and very durable plastic screen protector over the LCD.

Oh, is that? Well that's good to know. That's something most people don't know then. Thanks!

I did not have any LCD protector on my XTi from my last 9 months of usage and it still looks almost like new.
