Frankly I think that's an awful reason for disqualification - especially considering i named my pink car entry 'powerful pinky'. A named pic does help the judges, but I feel it isn't a must - and certainly not a disqualifiable point - I mean, are we here for the photographic skills or the ability to show we can name pictures ?

And to the point of posting the EXIF, it's only so we can all learn how to get the best shots from our cameras - but again, I don't see it as a must have item or the entry is invalid - this strikes me as most petty and holding TOO tight to a ruleset. As long as the entry conforms to the actual size in k or less, the dimentions & the topic - I don't see an issue.

Just tagging on a reminder that ''drevilsmom'' is kicking things off when we are settled on the rules rehash thing...

If there is any more input out there I would urge you to add it so we can move on with the fun of the competitions - i'm hoping from tomorrow onwards.

I hope I'm not too late.

Basically I agree with what Teekay said but include the forum file size of 150k for those who don't have hosted files.

Will we be showing our work off to it's best using such a constrained size ? is anyone here still on 56k ?

The loss of IQ at slightly higher compression would rarely be is enough to alter the judging results. Besides, is there anyone out there who could not get access to a hosting site if they want to post larger file sizes?

A 150K size limit helps level the playing field between those who have their own hosting site and those who use attachments to enter (at least WRT compression). I know I've gotten questions from several would-be entrants who had met the 200 K size limit but they couldn't "Attach" due to forum size limits, so it would also reduce confusion. Leaving the size limit at 800 pixels in the largest dimension allows you to save a less-compressed JPEG than allowing 1024 pixels. IMHO and subject to previously-stated caveats.

A side effect is that if entries are "attachments", they'll be less likely to disappear in a web site cleanup by one entrant or another.

Personally I have no problem sizing or compressing to whatever the rules require, but the majority of misunderstandings and complaints about rules etc. have arisen in the past when entrants either did not understand the file size rule or how to comply with it, so that's why I suggest it be scrapped.

On the G-series challenges, which have been running very smoothly (with a few rare exceptions) for years, we have never had a file size limit and nobody has complained about the lack. We just required an image size of exactly 640 pixels (longest side) then it was recently changed to 800 pixels as more people have high speed connections and bigger monitors.

Well, a week has gone by, 8 or 10 people have commented, and this sticky has been viewed 444 times. Can we vote on the two issues at hand? I bet plenty of people will vote even if they don't care to make a comment.

When it DOES come to image hosting, can I humbly suggest nobody use photobucket, or whatever the one is that produces that AWFUL yellow frog ! Recommended image hosts, along with a tool for resizing (see my amendments post earlier in the thread) be somewhere near, but below the rules.

Damn I hate that frog !

I see it all the time - it's where I post photos from. I have no particular allegiance to it but why is it hated?
