Default Newbie. Need pointers. First camera

I have just received my 40d Canon and 28-135mm IS lens for my birthday and don't know how to use it to its potential. Any pointers or facts i need to know would be great.

You've taken the right first step...welcome to POTN. There is a ton of expertise here, as well as plenty of folks willing to share it. Hide your money and your credit cards before you go any further. Then take a few minutes to explore the forum. It won't be long before you are in the thick of things.

Congrats! My advice/tips are:

Read the owner's manual.
Buy "Understanding Exposure" and read it.
Read the owner's manual again.
