It's not worth much?

As for the shot...hmm...oof/shaky/soft/not well lit...are notions that come to mind.

By the EXIF data, it's at f/4 with .8 seconds SS, at 29mm, and ISO 80. Mind telling us how 'far' away you were, from the penny? Did you use a flash, or any kind of lighting? Was the penny dimly lit?

Applied a histogram stretch. Any better?
Shot was from about 8 inches with tungstun bulbs.

I'd say that you use a larger aperture, and more light. As your bulbs seem to not be providing enough even light (dark corners on the bottom left/right). I guess this was taken with a G9, and though I don't have much experience, I'd say f/8 would be best...and adjust your SS accordingly, especially if you're using plain bulbs, instead of a flash. You could create a home-made lightbox, which would 'spread' the light more evenly...do a search on the forum...you'll find some DIY Lightboxes.

Scrumpy, I use PSP X2, one of the features is the stretch.
(To increase contrast by stretching the histogram
• Choose Adjust Brightness and Contrast Histogram Stretch.
• The Histogram Stretch command pulls the darkest pixel down to black and the lightest pixel up to white. This command does not affect images that already span from pure black to pure white. If the original image has pixels that are very close to black and white, using this command will have a very small effect. If the original image is very flat (nothing close to black or white), using this command will have a strong effect.)

. I think it did a good job.

I guess it helps to have the two pictures side by side because there doesn't appear to be a whole lot of difference between the two from the view here.
