I need to get long.

Very long.

So, I'm curious what 500MM f/4 shots using 2X extenders really look like, as it appears the 500 is about the right weight to realistically use for wildlife and BIF work.

And, I'm curious about the comparison of 300 f/2.8 IS L + 2X + 1.4X.

^^ Great shots you posted and, yeah, sure, astro photogs (who are clearly more crazy than 'us', LOL) cheat, because they're long and wide.

The sigmonster is just plain huge -- Interesting 1.4, 1.4 stack -- shockingly good IQ.

Very nice shots, Romy. Just reading the title of the thread brought your shots to mind. You have done great work with ultra-long lenses and lens-teleconverter combinations.

I don't think that's cheating. It's a lens of sorts, and it's long enough!

I guess I can throw something up here myself.

5D, 400/2.8, 2X, and 1.4X telecons (1120 mm), 1/100 sec, f/14, ISO 200, resized down to 800 pixels across for the web:

Very nice moon, Tom.... the 400 2.8 is really the 300 2.8's bigger brother! :D

Thanks, Romy. The 400 is a monster, but it really is a nice lens. It also offers the only means of autofocus beyond 840 mm (600/4 & 1.4X) that is available.

On a side note, I had talked with you on another forum about the 40D and live view. I just got my 40D, and if it ever gets warm outside, I intend to use live view quite a bit. I think it'll be very useful.

Which "00 f/2.8" is that? 300/2.8? 400/2.8?

Nice shot, BTW! :)
