I wonder if people at Canon sometime read the news: The main competitor releases 3 brand new camera in a matter of months, with crushing features. not talking about Pentax, Sony and others pushing at the doors too ... and what do we have from canon?? an mere update in the low end segment!!??.
Look how smart the D300 and D700 look (integrated flash, weather sealed, well priced, plenty of pro features). Will canon understand that 80% of the 40D owner or to-be owners would happily throw in extra bucks to get a decent camera with better features (e.g. weather sealing, high res. screen, and lens calibrating at least!!!) (most of the features camera that are less expensive than the 40D already have by the way). When is the 5D replacement supposed to arrive? in year 2010? Will there be any (serious I mean) competitor to the D300? Come on Canon wake up, and if you do, make sure you hit right, because there is no room for error this time! |

I dont see the 5D MKII being a solution to everyones craving for a better camera, its FF & some people prefer the 1.6x crop, so IF Canon release a 5DMkII it will be no interest to some, the 5D has always been aimed at a much different market, where as the 30/40D are aimed at a much more mass market.
I heard the 40D may be replaced soon, damn that didnt have much of a lifespan eh? |

Thanks Petiot, you started my day off with a good laugh. You don't really understand the manufacturing business, do you?

I must admit I'm jealous of the Nikon forums only because they have something different to read and talk about recently. Certainly Canon isn't living in a bubble and are developing products that will compete just fine. I'm sure the Nikon forums were full of "When will we have something to compete with the 5D" threads for years. I'm simply looking forward to the next releases when they arrive.

Canon is doing exactly what they need to do to be successful. They have a broad spectrum of equipment developed for every level of photographer and in each market they are held at the top. Sure, they're showing emphasis on the development of entry-level equipment right now. Who isn't? D-SLR's have become cheap enough that everyone and their mother can afford one. Why not develop a line (or multiple lines) of D-SLR's that are easy to use for any regular-Joe. It's a goldmine! As for their professional line? The other manufacturers are releasing new models to merely catch up to the new bar Canon has set for everyone to target. If companies like Nikon, Olympus, Sony, Pentax and Sigma want a share of this market they need to... and they are. Some are taking the initiative to raise the bar themselves. That's a good thing. When Canon steps up to take command of a particular market they won't disappoint.
Ultimately, if any particular manufacturer is not supplying you with what you believe to be sufficient or competitive equipment, perhaps you should consider a change. There are plenty of other options out there. |

Canon knew about the new Nikon cameras FAR before the public did. They weren't surprised. Canon is not going to panic and release a bunch of cameras outside of their regular cycle just to beat Nikon to the punch. They are a business, and have made forecasts months and years prior to each release, and will stick to their plan.
The only people that are panicking are people with buyers remorse who bellyache about everything they buy.

Does Canon seem to be behind Nikon in the features war? Yeah, probably, save the 1-series.
Does Canon read the newspaper? I'll bet someone there does. The last thing that Canon wants to do is appear reactionary. They've sat atop the hill for a long time (at least in some folk's mind...) and are everyone's target - especially number two. Canon may be taken down a peg, but they have their reasons for their timing - and right now, still stinging from the 1d3 issue, they can't afford to F^*% up. Who knows - there may not be a replacement for the 5d. It is aimed at an odd market segment, and the 5d when released, was still a lot of cash. It competed directly with Canon's one-series. Even Michael Reichman on Luminous Landscape questioned who Nikon was competing against with the announcement of the d700 - it surely will erode the D3 sales. So the real question is there a market for a replacement 5D at $3000 and a 1d3 with a 1.3 sensor at $4000 - I would not be surprised to see a new one-series - FF, large pixels, about 12-16 mp, and 10+ FPS to replace both the 1d3 and the 5d. How do you like them apples? |

Six months prior to that, in February, Canon released 1 more camera with crushing features: 1D3. Six months after that, in January 2008, another one: 450D/XSi. Six months after that, in June, yet another one: 1000D/XS. And a whole bunch of new P&S and sSLR-like models, as well.. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/ You have to take everything into consideration before giving a blank statement like this one..

i'm not fussed at all about what canon or nikon are doing. i have more than enough lenses and cameras to take all the pics i'll ever need. the iso 800 and 1600 are better than 135 film ever was. would always be nice to have a nicer and 'better' camera, and L lenses, but i don't think it's necessary. my limitations are longer the equipment; my limitation is me. i'm happy and content. i have to admit, as time goes by, i pay less attention to what new equipment is available and more to looking at pics, taking pics and gaining knowledge on techniques and thinking about my own techniques and how to improve. having said all that, it's still fun to see what's the latest and greatest in lenses and bodies...

Actually I have no plans whatsoever to upgrade, im not into the whole upgrade lark, buying each new body when its released just to gain a few new gadgets, im getting great results right now, thats never going to change, if my 5D dies & is too costly to repair, then I will seriously consider what is on the market at the time, but no desire when my current setup is doing the job very nicely indeed.

As you can see from my signature I dont yet have a significant amount of quality glass. My 30D body which I think is great will be with me for a long time as my priority is to upgrade my glass. My current shopping list is:
EF 70-200 f/2.8 IS USM 1.4x Teleconverter EF 100-400 f/4-5.6 IS USM EF 50 f/1.4 USM EF-S 10-22 When I get all that I will be a happy man. I hope to buy the EF 100-400 soon as the rugby season will be commencing at the end of August and I just cant wait to be rid of that 75-300 which I used to shoot Munster Rugby games last season.

Wait just a second, didnt canon release the 40d, 1dmkIII and 1dsmkIII when Nikon announced nothing at that time to compete? So the 1dmkIII, 40d have been out for over a year, 1dmkIII for 6 months and we finally see new Nikons. HHmmmmm, not to mention xsi, xs....
