africa turned out to be the experience of a lifetime for all of us. we were on an organized safari and what i witnessed was unbelievable.
on the first night at the mala mala game preserve we saw a mighty pride of lions feeding on a full grown giraffe it had taken down a few days earlier and two days later before we left we witnessed hyenas feeding on the putrefying carcass after the lions had their fill. on our first morning game drive at the mashatu game reserve we saw an elephant calf that was only hours old take its first shaky steps guarded by its mother and grandmother and then we saw a pack of wild dogs devour a full grown boar warthog it had taken down about a half-hour before our arrival. we also saw nine cheetahs in one day and we all laughed when a trio of them harassed a very angry bat-eared fox. a procession of elephants passed right by us in the okavango delta. we were amazed at their grace and silence. we also watched a pair of hippos mate. on the chobe river we saw dozens of elephants taking their evening drink. we also saw dozens of hippo, cape buffalo and several crocodiles. we stayed at the grand livingstone hotel the last two days where i photographed victoria falls and an albino vervet monkey ....... needless to say i took thousands of pictures, mostly with the 1d mark III and 100-400L. on the games drives i used a monopod when ever possible ... probably 90% of the time. the combination was perfect. i also used the 16-35L II mostly on the 30d ... i'll post a few pictures with that combo later, and some more animal pictures in the wildlife forum later. ed rader ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by ed rader : 19th of July 2008 (Sat) at 20:47. |

Thanks for sharing Ed. Those shots make me glad you helped me with my purchase of the 100-400. The shot of the elephants really stands out great work.

Wow Ed - thanks for sharing... pretty much a photographers dream trip I'd say. Looking forward to more photos and more stories (also more camera/lens/photography stories - the nerdy bits that my friends dont understand hehe)
Cheers, Nicko
