Default Flash Icon

I just bought the G1 yesterday and am confused about using an external flash. When using the camera flash there is a flash icon in the window. When I hook up my Sunpack 355 flash unit (EOS compatible, I use it with my Elan 2e) the icon dissapears and the camera acts as if there is no flash turned on and overexposes the shots, am I doing something wrong?
