The D5 / D300 is probably a better comparison. They are similarly priced. I think the D5 is a full-frame camera, while the D300 has a 1.5x focal length conversion.

And even then, thats a WHOLE different comparison in terms of the 40D vs D300...totally different style of camera.

Hey, why the comparison anyway. Let's all have fun!
In communist Chinese there is no division of cameras. All cameras are equal. Except the government cameras, they have special rights and privileges. Put it this way, the D300 beats the 300D that's for sure. ![]() OT: (Love the RC car photos Jeff)

Comparing the image quality of 2 cameras on an LCD screen of an image shot in a shop is about the same as comparing how well 2 cars drive by sitting in them on a dealers lot

The D300 is very nearly twice the price of the 40D, why are we even comparing them? Would you compare a $40,000 car with an $80,000 car?

I see nothing wrong with comparing two cameras (or whatever) at different costs. If you don't, how would you ever find out if you get anything you really want, if you spend more money?
I've looked a bit at the D300 (have friends who have it), and found that yes, it has a number of features not present on the 40D (programmable timer requires TC-80 N3 for 40D; post-processing fetaures has to be done on computer with 40D; wireless flash requires separate master unit on 40D) and that it has slightly higher image quality, but that's not very important, as the difference is so small, that in many cases we can't tell the difference between a Nikon or a Canon image. The rear display is a lot better on the D300. Surprisingly, when reading the specifications, autofocus is often better on the 40D, as is (this is my opinion; seasoned Nikon users probably think the opposite) handling of the camera. The Nikon cameras spread out their different buttons far too much, in a seemingly random configuration. For high speed action, 40D wins. For number of features, D300 wins. Where I live, the D300 costs 50% more. If it's worth it is up to you.

50 point is cool. But most of the time I use the centre one.

I had a good play with these two the other day and made some comparison shots against my 40D. IQ wise, there was little to tell between them without serious pixel peeping. Both Nikons seemed to meter better in bright sunlight, but I had to work a little to expose correctly with the 40D. This may just have been the settings on the camera. From a handling and ergonomic viewpoint, I found the Canon to be more comfortable and more user friendly. However, I am not used to the Nikon control layout. What really does stand out for me is the solid build quality of the Nikons. You would expect the D3 to be solid, but the D300 is also very well built and in my opinion more solid than the 40D. If I was starting from scratch, I would lean towards the D300, but looking at the lens lineup, I would struggle to find a Nikon lens that matches the 24-105L. BUT, if Nikon brought one out, I would consider changing.

I was stuck in these 2 cameras as well when I switched from Pentax earlier this year. I picked Canon because of price/lens lineup and I also trust Canon more since all my p&s b4 dslr were all Canons.
To be fair, D300 is a better camera. However, is it 500~600$ better? The main advantage of D300 is ISO and LCD. I would say D300 is a better camera, but it's not good enough for a Canon/40D users to switch if you've already owned some Canon lens. However, it's unlikely for anyone to switch if they already have tried "L"... ![]() |

I've thought that a fairly important feature of the D300 is the ability to fine-tune the focus for each of your lenses, so that if you feel you're getting front or backfocusing behavioiur, you can correct it yourself. The high end Canons have that, but nothing in the range of the D300. One out-of-warranty lens calibration will make up half the price difference...right??
