if it ever comes to production, i'd love to see you guys instantly diss it, just like the many who found the 5d mark II's hd video capability as a gimmick.

I can't see much use for fuel cells in cameras but they may be useful for flashes.

Old thread, but almost all the posters in this thread have been way off. It's not going to happen, but many of the things people have said just aren't an issue.

There are huge benefits to the fuel cells... The biggest advantage is that you can have a flash taking virtually limitlett numbers of shots for weeks without running of juice. The energy stored in fuel cells can be huge.

I've seen working fuel cells in other electronic devices. They have been around for quite a long time - I think it was about 5 years ago that I saw it. But they're not going to happen for a long time, if at all in this sort of application. The downsides are too big. The biggest, Air travel just wont be certified. Who wants a camera that can't be taken on the plane with them. As someone mentioned, stored hydrogen and flashing electronics. Throw it in a bag with one of those dell laptops that catch fire and you've pretty much got a bomb on the plane.

People patent a lot of ideas that will never make it into production.
I think this is one of those ideas.

Toyota patents 1 million ideas a year.

A fuel cell battery "charger" would be sweet; imagine being on a 2 week expedition in the jungle with no power; a fuel cell charger means you would only have to bring one battery for the whole trip and recharge every night off of hydrogen.

Two weeks wouldn't even be a stretch for the sort of power a fuel cell could deliver.

Yeah, but it would be a stretch for me out in the jungle... ;)

everyone should know this is utter bull****.

fuel-cells are low current devices, very-very-low current.
higher current requires very very large reaction area (the membrane where the current is generated) which would require a large system with less room for fuel.

there is no way a fuelcell would be able to power a flash for example, it would have like a 60 second cycle time. nor could it power a camera with a descent burst mode or anything. I doubt it could be made to fit in a camera at all short of a 1d sized thing, and even then you need hydrogen gas canisters to recharge it etc.

its not a viable technology for in camera usage. what i could see is a fuelcell generator, it could be smaller than that diesel thing in the garage, maybe like a thin suitcase or something, that you'd bring with you on safari and charge your batteries with, but definately not as depicted here, or at least not with what can be currently created.
