Light Artifacts?

I did some night shooting last night and kind of like the results. But some of the shots had artifacts in them, some kind of lens aberrations and wondering if anyone has seen them before and can explain how they got there and how to prevent them. I have seen the stacked octagons before, but never anything in red and green.

With 40D and Tokina 12-24. EXIF is intact.

That looks just like lens flare to me. They come from the dominant light source in both photos. My Sigma 10-20mm lens has similar issues.

Thanks Mike. Have you found any way to prevent them? They are kind of neat looking, but I'd just as soon they weren't there.

Don't shoot directly at a point light source

OR

Photoshop them out

Thanks guys, that's what I suspected. Do all lenses do this? It's the first UWA I've had and really the first night shooting I have done for years.

I don't think that you can really avoid it when there's a bright light source in view.

Here's one of mine from last year, notice the flare by the oval on the tomb:

Fortunately it's not as noticeable as the flare in your shots but it's still there.

Maybe we need to do a show us your lens flare thread?

So it is in color then, day or night. That's interesting.
