Red face 430ex Flash HELP!! PLEASE!? :)

I have a Canon 40D, and just purchased a 430ex Speedlite. This is really a stupid question....but.....can you use this flash when shooting RAW?? How come I can't figure it out!? It only works when shooting in JPG. I like to shoot in RAW, in Tv mode. Any help is greatly appreciated!!! Thanks in advance!

Of course it works with RAW!
For indoor shoots, you should generally use M mode. For outdoor shoots when the flash is being used a fill, use Av (and make sure HSS is enabled on the speedlite)

Go into M mode, set your ISO to 400, shutter to 1/250s, f-stop to f/5.6, point flash at ceiling. Make sure flash is powered on. Shoot. You should get a reasonably exposed picture.

RAW has nothing to do with your flash.
If you're in Tv with a shutter speed faster than 1/250th, hit the lightning bolt on the 430 (once I think) to enable high speed sync. Look for the "H" symbol on the 430.

Ok, I tried what you said, and I'm telling you...it is not working! I switched over to M in RAW, and nothing! No flash. Then, I switched to "portrait" mode in JPG, and the flash works. What am I doing wrong?? What is the HSS on the speedlite? I pressed the "lightening bolt" button, and tried everything but it won't work. Is something wrong with my flash, or is it me!?

well, your flash and type of file has nothing to do with one another ..

have you tried in your c. fn and see if the " flash fires " is enable?

If your flash is not enabled, it will work in all the BASIC modes like Green Box, Portrait, Sports etc,
but not in the CREATIVE modes like P, Tv, Av, M.

RAW is only available in CREATIVE modes, so it looks like you are switching to the BASIC modes with your flash disabled. The Basic modes over ride the flash disabling and let your flash work.

Flash Firing is not a Custom Function. Flash Firing - Enable/Disable is in the flash control menu found in the second yellow "Setup" menu. (page 103 in your 40D manual)

I am a bit new but is there not a small flash button on the left side that you need to push once you are in any manual mode?

As long as flash is ON in Tv, Av, M mode - it will fire. I think in the green box and other preset modes (portrait, macro, sports, etc ...), there are parameters to meet - I never bothered to read/understand because I'm never in those modes.

With flash attached, in Tv mode, I do not think flash will allow you to set shutter above 250 unless you have that "hi-sync" (soemthing like that) ON. Another mode I hardly ever touch so not too familiar with it

Not sure pushing the "internal flash pop-up" (lightning bolt) button will make difference wtih external flash attached. Flash will fire if it is "ON" - it should

Have you tried to email/call Canon Service? May be something wrong with flash.

RAW or JPEG should not matter - like others say, it's just a storage format.

Guys... the lightning bolt "on the 430", not on the camera.
Looks like msowsun found the answer.

Thank you SO much! All I had to do was 'enable' the flash and now it's working just fine! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

I had a heck of a time with weird things going on with my flash. Turned out it was all in the 3rd party sync cord I was using. Sent it back and got a Canon one and everything worked like it was suppose to. Just a thought.

Not the OP's post. That problem was resolved with a camera setting.
