Default Will the 5D II have movie mode? The New Nikon D90 has it!

According to Bob Atkins, the New Nikon D90 will have an HD movie mode.....

Quote:
HD movie mode: The D90 features the D-Movie mode, which shoots HD movie with sound at 24fps.

I guess we'll have to wait for the Canon 60D or maybe 5D II if you want video.

I guess video is the way of the future now. This must have caught Canon by surprise because we could easily have waited a little longer for the 50D to include video.

Wow... is it gonna have the same depth of field as the picture when recording the video If so... that's so cool!!! Less need for a $5000 video camera.

I really don't think that Canon has been surprised by what Nikon has or will recently introduce.

I just believe that Canon is playing more of a defensive role in trying to keep it's market share while Nikon is having to be on the offensive do gain back those that jumped ship in the past years.

On the D90, focus is locked during video mode.

an HD Video camera will very often shoot 60 (yes, SIXTY) frames per second. So, with the biggest baddest-ass cameras out there pushing 11 frames per second, even the film standard (24fps) is a looooong ways away. (I mean my old XHA1 HD Video Cam from Canon did that, but it was quite very expensive).

Video on a Canon device? sure. I own the SD750 for that very purpose. But on a Full Frame, or a semi-decent prosumer camera? nah, every engineer would use the weight and space to enhance the existing features.

Seeing as the 50D with digic 4 doesn't have it, I doubt it.
But if it did, it would be a boom for wedding photogs. They can now take wedding pics AND videos. Just imagine what you can charge for such service.

The sample videos on the Nikon D90 minisite are actually fairly impressive. Stunnaz, I dont think the focus is locked.....several of the videos clearly show the focus being changed back and forth.

To be honest i wont care the slightest of the 5d II doesnt have this feature and i dont think it will. It would have made more sense on the 50d so if canon has the technology ready i'm pretty sure we would have seen it in the 50d. As it was already pointed out, Canon probably knows what Nikon are up to far sooner than we do so i'm sure they saw this coming.

I'm a wedding photographer but I can't imagine how I would be able to take a movie and good pictures with the same camera at the same time.
What matters to me is ISO low light performance, AF, light metering etc during the wedding.

If I would start making wedding movies it would be with dedicated equipment.

Personally I don't want to see movie mode, face detection and other similar gimmics in the next 5D. What I want compared to the current 5D is even better low light performance and vastly improved AF (the weak point of the 5D). Some added speed would be welcome as well and I wouldn't mind 16 mp on the sensor.

I challenge you to see if you can tell the difference between 24 and 60fps.
Cinema plays at around 24fps. If it's good enough for the big screen, it's good enough for the D90.

Credible source from the heart of Canon confirmed to my uncles brothers cousins friend from elementary school that EOS 5D MkII will not only have movie mode but also p0rn movie mode where photographers choose between 10 cheap musical backgrounds and have "auto leak on internet" function...

Cinema film projection use a mechanical shutter to trick the brain into perceiving a higher frame rate... if you just saw the raw 24 fps, if would not look as good.

The main reason I'm not interested in a video mode in a DSLR is becuase the ergonomics suck for that role. Trying to hold a DSLR level and steady is not easy for any extended peroid of time, while straining to look at the LCD (you're screwed in bright light). There is a reason pro cameras are shoulder mount and use viewfinders...

They or 3rd party support makers like Manfrotto can make shoulder mount bracket type support easily and May be sold as optional accessory.

Nikon does not have their own line of video cameras which would compete with this feature. Also, I'd imagine you's need some way to cool the sensor since CMOS generates a lot of heat while the sensor is active. And the hotter the chip, the more noise is generated along with the image data.

Top shutter speed is 1/4000s while on the Canon 40D/50D it's 1/8000s, but I don't recall ever actually using 1/8000s, so clearly that's not an essential feature!
Given that the Nikon CMOSes are ISO 200 native, this effectively means that the maximum amount of light at a given f-stop can be 1/4 as much as on a Canon body. That's not insignificant.
