Default Shadows Under Helmet (Football)

Hi,

Trying to get some practice in before my son's high school football season start this Saturday. His games will start around 10:00 on Saturdays. I took this picture during midday and shot in AV, with +2/3rd's exposure. I probably should of tried 1 or 1 1/3 but was afraid of blowing highlights. Should I have metered his face that way no shadows would have appeared ?

Have you thought about using fill-in flash?

There is little to nothing you can do about this, other than dodge in photoshop. It is just the nature of the beast. If you overexpose any more, you will blow everything out.

I agree. In fact, I usually don't go much more than + 1/3 or so in Av and that's just to adjust for the fact that I think my camera tends to underexpose by about that amount. In photoshop, I will select areas I want (usually faces) and use the shadow/highlight sliders to adjust those areas. While selected I will apply a little selective USM as well.

If you meter for the shadow, everything will be blown out. You need to accept it, shoot from a different angle, or find some way to get light in there.

You can always adjust it in photoshop later. There are many different ways to go about it. If it bothers you that much, find one that works for you and go for it.

Thanks for the responses! I enhanced it a little by using the shadows/highlight slider priot to posting. I'll try different angles. I guess these are the problems you will run into while shooting around midday.

One of the worst times to shoot anything is under a bright midday sun. VERY harsh lighting.

I think you did fine.
I wouldn't go any higher.
Your shadow/highlight adjustment did enough.
Thanks for sharing.

agreed! Funny thing is that non photogs think bright sunny days should be the best for pic taking.

Meh...Its debatable what the "best" time is. Im kinda partial to 1.5~2h before sunset. LOTS of different opportunities there.

Mmm...good time there, but for sports you run the risk, if shooting JPEG, of the light getting too warm on you.
