Default Big Ben London

Of course Big Ben is actually the bell - which you never see - but everyone just says "big ben" anyway! 300D with Tamron 28-75. My friend Simon suggested I upload it here. I'm very pleased with the exposure and sharpness of the clock face, but I realise it's not a perfect shot!

lovely shot, I'd use a longer exposure to capture more light trails

Hi Justin,

Yes I think it's a great shot. I love the lighting on the right hand side of the image particularly. It feels pretty calm and empty, and then you can look up and tell that the time was 11.10
I wish I could make out the shape top of the bell tower a bit better, but I suppose to do so would have overblown the right.

I like the silhouette figure on the right, had it been a longer exposure would have lost that.

I would have loved the silhouette figure frozen (ie quick exposure, high ISO, noise)
I would have loved more trails (long exposure, no silhouette, possible loss of quality from being stopped down beyond "optimum" aperture of lens)
And yes, would like more detail in the clock tower! which would overexpose the clock face!

I think the trick would be to take one of these at *exactly* the right time on *exactly* the right day!

Welcome here! Keep on shooting the way you started with your "Big Ben" capture.

I think it's just a tad too dark, otherwise it's great.

Just taken a look at it in photoshop and using shadow/highlight brings out a lot more of the detail, can upload if you want.

Thanks, I would certainly be interested to see what you managed to get. My DVI monitor tends to show more shadow detail than most - I have since seen this pic on other monitors and it does generally tend to look dark. The more I see of other monitors, the more I think that in the absence of any calibration or ICM etc etc I am getting pretty damn good colour matching etc just by having a high quality (NEC) DVI monitor - which is now 3 years old.

Used shadow highlight might have overdone it but difficult to guage with lower res pic. Alterred colour balance slightly and run through neat image to take some noise out.

Well, Biko, I like what you've done with it. Of course there are now a lot of JPEG artifacts in the uploaded version (maybe only visible on LCD monitor) but I think you have managed to balance it very nicely.
