Great shot! What was the exposure time? Also I think you should photo shop out the tree branches that are in the bottom of the photo, They are distracting and take focus off the moon a bit.

+1 On the tree removal. Is it cropped?

Wow, over 2,600 posts and this is your first picture post? A bit long overdue, huh? Anyhow, in my opinion, I'd darken the entire shot a tad as it seems almost blown out along the right edge, then I'd bump up the contrast a bit to make the craters and everything stand out.

Nice shot Norman. Bracket your exposures, some on the dark side and some on the light. That way you'll hit one dead on. I would switch to full manual, use a tripod(if you're not) and a shutter release cable(or camera delay timer). Might want to turn off any in camera noise reduction, at ISO 200 and short exposure it shouldn't be an issue.

Hey guys, thanks alot for your advice... Here's the revise pic...
Yes Justin, a bit slow for sure... I got my 40D May 1st but haven't been able to shoot good enough shots to post here, well untill this one... I wanted some honest feedback and this is only place where one can get it... I usually take bird pics... Yes it is cropped, shot at 1/100 sec on a tripod with a cable release switch, as Nighthound mentioned AND (-1/3 Exposure Bracketing in manual mode... Still have to look into that...) I haven't done anything with the hot spot on the righ side of the moon yet.. And I'll trurn off the camera noise reduction next time... We have a Harvest Moon coming Sept 15th, hopefully the skies will be clear... ![]() I guess while were at it, this was shot on the same night but at 7:45pm ![]() Camera Model Canon EOS 40D Shooting Date/Time 9/8/2008 7:45:55 PM Shooting Mode Manual Exposure Tv( Shutter Speed ) 1/320 F Number = F5.6 ISO Speed Ratings = 400 Exif Version = Version 2.21 Date Time Original = 2008-09-08 19:45:55 Date Time Digitized = 2008-09-08 19:45:55 Components Configuration = YCbcr Shutter Speed Value = 8.38 TV Aperture Value = 5 AV Exposure Bias Value = ±0EV Flash = Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode Focal Length = 280mm Color Space = sRGB Interoperability IFD Pointer = Offset: 2362 Custom Rendered = Custom process Exposure Mode = Manual exposure White Balance = Auto white balance AF Mode Manual focusing Picture Style Standard Sharpness 5 Contrast 0 Saturation 0 Color tone 0 Color Space sRGB Long exposure noise reduction 0 High ISO speed noise reduction 1:Enable Highlight tone priority 0 File Size 46 KB Drive Mode: Single shooting

One other thing you could try using is the mirror lock-up (forget what custom function that is). Since you've already got the camera on a tripod with a shutter release, the mirror lock-up in one more way to try and reduce any kind of motion.

Hey Justin and thanks... I did try that and for some reason, the shots came out a bit blurry, not sure why... Still trying to figure that one out... Going to try that again as soon as the weather clears up here... I appreciate your input...

I dunno, I disagree. I like the trees in it. You see so so so many shots of just the moon, (including many I've taken, I won't hide it) and I like the trees in there.
Kinda makes me imagine myself standing there straining my neck towards the sky for a glimpse of the moon through the tree tops.. and then you've finally found it. Or maybe I'm crazy. |
