POTN G-Series Speed Challenge #1 - Speed

Speed seems an obvious topic for our first Speed Challenge (named for taking just one week). It can be motion or stop-motion but it should illustrate movement..

Please read the rules and avoid odd sizes, borders, more than one photo, etc.

To submit, click Post Reply and put your Photo Name in the Subject Line. Don't forget your Camera Model.

Post until Sunday midnight GMT, 13 February 2005.

Good luck,

Don

_______________

Please consider turning on Private Messaging in your profile.
If your photo does not meet the rules (for example, for size), the host can send you a Private Message. If you have this feature turned off, no one can warn you and it will not be considered. You can turn this on by clicking "User CP, Edit Options, Enable Private Messaging" (about a third of the way down the page). Thank you.

_______________

Photo Submissions

1. Camera -- photos must be taken with a Canon G-Series Camera (G1,G2,G3,G5,G6) or Pro 1.

2. Time -- any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible, although photos that have won other competitions should NOT be entered.

3. Size -- photo must be EXACTLY 640 pixels on the longest side, with NO BORDERS. Odd-sized photos ineligible.

4. Post-Processing -- whatever you like; host will decide whether it works.

5. Posting --

  • ONE PHOTO per photographer in each challenge.
  • Photo Name in the message subject line.
  • Camera model.
6. No Commenting -- Photos only. When the posting is closed, comments can be made in this same thread. Photographers should try to anticipate the obvious questions -- where it was taken, EXIF data, special techniques, etc. -- and add the information with their photo.

Hosting

1. The challenge host is the winner of the last challenge.
2. Choose a topic and list any special rules.
3. Post a photo if you like, but do not choose it as the winner.
4. Post the topic in a thread with this title: “POTN G-Series Speed Challenge #X - Topic.”
5. At the end of competition, choose a Winner and two Runners-up and explain why the photos were selected.
6. Put these at the end of the thread titled “POTN G-Series Speed Challenge Winners.”
7. Winner starts with Rule #1 above.

Time

One challenge every week, on the following schedule:
  • New Topic ... Tuesday by midnight GMT.
  • Posting Starts ... Right after topic is announced.
  • Posting Stops ... Sunday midnight GMT
  • Winner Announcement ... Monday by midnight GMT.
_______________

Rationale

Believing that any action is better than inaction, I decided to get this challenge going. If you'd like to know why I decided on these rules, my rationale is here...

http://photography-on-the.net …d.php?p=405716#post405716

The rules can still be discussed and modified for future challenges, so if you have an opinion, please express it in the other thread. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the challenge.

Infrared Scooter

IMAGE: http://www.kleptography.com/dl/speed.jpg

Practicing my panning on Christmas Day in Khao Lak, Thailand. Yes, it was the day before the tsunami struck (and this is what I mean by answering obvious questions in advance). :D

G1, modified for infrared, 093 filter -- 1/160th second, f4.0. It was P mode... would have been better on Av at f2.2 or f2.5 to produce faster shutter speed but, hey, I was on holiday.

This is my first attempt at stopping motion. This was my first day with the G3 and frankly, I have no clue what the settings were.

Title: "Air Dog"
Camera: G3
Settings: I just don't know

I hopw I did all of this correctly. Great thread. I hope this takes off and keeps going.

My cousin's family was visiting us over the Christmas break in 2004 and he was tossing his little kid up and down for fun. I caught this right as the little guy was starting to come down.

Taken with Canon G3 - ISO 50, 1/250 sec., f/2.0, bounced E-TTL flash.

If you notice, this little guy is also the face of my avatar. ;)

Don, I just realized I'm going on vacation in one week, so I'd won't be around Sunday afterwards, in the eventuality that I had to judge this coming week's contenders.

PM me if you would like me to remove the entry, OK?

School's Out For The Week

Hi all, erstwhile lurker here flushed out of hiding by this great thread. Here's a picture of my son running down a sidewalk in NYC, right after school on a Friday.

Taken with a G6, shutter priority at 1/20 sec, ND enabled to allow a slower shutter speed, f/5.6, 7.20mm focal length. In PSE 3.0, a little bit of color saturation enhancement on the subject, with the background rendered to black and white to draw attention to the subject. No blur filters applied, it is blurred as it is . Thanks, have a pleasant weekend all!
