Hi,
I know this has probably been asked before but I scanned through the threads and did not see it so here goes. I was going to buy the Canon 40D and gave my husband the money so he could put it on his credit card so he could order my camera. He kept putting it off and never got it and there was a good reason. I live in AU right now he decided he did not want to be with me anymore and so he canceled my visa back in June and did not tell me. I have been living in AU now for a few months illegally and did not know it. So bottom line is, I am being sent back to the US and he kept all the money for my camera, about $1200. So now I cannot afford a 40D and I have decided to get the Canon PowerShot. What I would like to know is which is the absolute best PowerShot on the market right now? I have read so many reviews and I just can't decide which one is the best so I thought I would ask you all. One thing that I really liked about the 40D was that you could take photos so fast without having to wait so long. I know that the PowerShot cannot do that, but which one is the best on speed? I will wait until I get back in the US so that I will have the warranty there but I will get it as soon as I get there. So which one do you think is the best? Jesse |

G series, the G10 is best non dSLR, then you're down the superzooms if you want powershot, so currently, the SX10 and the SX1, the latter being the better and actually offering over 4fps, but you'll need to wait until the spring for that one to be available in the US.

Why not buy a used Digital Rebel XT? You'll get the same instant picture / no shutter lag you liked about the 40d, but it will only cost you about $250.

As you are familiar with Canon DSLRs, I would venture to suggest that the S5iS and it's current replacements might be your best choice.
Problem is, that there is never a best choice overall. The elusive "best" boils down to what a photographer wants & expects out of his or her camera. I have an S3iS, have recently acquired a Rebel XTi/400D, but I'm not willing to give up the S3. There's too much that is useful & exceptional about each camera, so I'm keeping them both for various reasons.

Where in the world do you find a Digital Rebel XT for $250. All the ones that I can find are about twice that much. I will be leaving AU in a couple weeks an returning to the US. Where in the US do you find one that is that cheap?

There are several on my local craigslist for under $300. Also, with Live cashback, you can come to about the same on eBay.

Gee whiz, sorry about your relationship issues!
It looks like you've had some dSLR experience. If that's the case, like you said, it may be hard adjusting to ANY P&S if you crave the speed of a dSLR. So looking for a used XT may be a good way to go, like some others have mentioned here. You'll also have to consider lenses though, so you'll have to do some real financial scrutinising before you commit to anything. As for P&S cameras, the G10 is currently the 'top-dog' while the SX1-IS is the top superzoom. Both have just been announced and it may be hard to get your hands on them at this moment, depending on where you shop. |

Sorry to hear about your loss. Canon G10 retails for $499.99. But if that's your price range you can get a Canon 30D from BH Photo for a relatively good price. If not I suggest searching through the sell forums. Lot of people selling XTi bundles for cheap.

Take a hard look at the S5 or just released SX10 - specially if you want looooong zoom capability.
Fact is, in the digital era many point-and-shoots have the quality and features to more than satisfy the average camera user plus they are lighter and a LOT less expensive. My bride recently bought a Xsi SLR and heavy long lens thinking she would like it better and went back to her S5 saying the image quality even with a quite large blow up print plus it is lighter and easier to use and she just bought the SX10. Depends on what you shoot and how often but you can see some of her amateur pics at weather wundergournd - just google icmoore and you will probably find some of her pics. She has taken well over 100k pics past year with her S5 so we can guarantee it is reliable. Now I have an Xsi DSLR that I don't know what to do with (thank heaven I was able to sell the L series lens!) |

S5's are still available from time to time. but I have to put my vote in for one of the 600 series powershots - however it truly is a bummer that they are no longer made.
the G10 is probably the closest thing to them now. but hunt down ebay or amazon for a used or refurbed 610, 620, 630 or 640. only the 650 has IS, but IMHO they took really stellar pictures and had a good range and good IQ. the SX10 is another good one or (god forbid I get flamed for this on a canon site) the Panasonic FZ28 is also pretty nice

For what it's worth, i would continue to save up for a DSLR rather than spending money on an S or G
