While doing my online research I have filtered the results to 2 DSLR cameras. Have a look at the filtering link: http://www.viewscore.com/category_pa..._1=DSLR*-*DSLR the 20D with (11) professional reviews and the D70 with (20) professional reviews After the ranking analyze I can see that the 20D is ranked first (with 3 points difference) but costs more… Is the higher ranking worth the price difference? |

Those search results will list threads where the D70 is compared to 300D/Rebel, 10D and 20D You'll find that the genral consensus is that the D70 edges out the 300D,.. looses to the 10D and is simply blown out of the water by the 20D.

You will receive a very biased opinion here. Virtually everyone here has already made the Canon decision. If it was me making the decision for me, I would choose Canon (hardly biased at all). Do you want the extra resolution that you get from the 20D. Is that worth the extra money. It would be in my book.

I'm a 20D user and I chose it over the D70,. and as mentioned above,. I would also be one who would chose the 10D over the D70.

FWIW, lens compatibilty is easy with Canon, mind-boggling with Ni*on. Any Canon EF or EF-S lens ever made will work on the 20D. There are issues with some older non-Canon lenses, but that is not unique to Canon. As for Ni*on, they may all mount on the camera, but auto-focus, auto-exposure, etc. may not work.
This may be an issue as you fill out your lens inventory unless you can afford all new lenses. Have Fun, |

Just today Nikon proved once again that they don't live on this planet, as they introduced the Nikon D2Hs for $3500 US. Great camera except (and you have to really search for this in the fine print) it's still a 4MP camera as the D2H was! Like the D2H this would be the camera I'd buy if I owned a newspaper. Why? Because it's good enough for the paper but none of the shooters will take it home to shoot weddings or freelance work. It's just not good enough for that! 4MP in 2005? What are they thinking? I know that you are comparing the 20D and the D70 (and the D70 from most accounts is a very nice camera) so why am I ranting about the D2Hs? Well you not only are going to marry the D70, you are going to marry the D70's family which looks quite disfunctional right now. Oh, the last point. I'd be very surprised if the D70 was replaced in a couple of days with a D90. If you do decide to go Nikon, you might want to wait until the PMA is over.

Rankings and reviews can be valuable, but what it comes down to is what do you need? If you are looking for resolution, speed, and specific "pro" features, the 20D will give you way more than the D70. The D70 is closer in features to the digital Rebel. The 20D is a step up, in fact several steps up from both of those cameras.
I have worked with the 20D along side the D70 and the 20D for my money blows it away. If you can spend the extra money go for it. If you invest in Canon L lenses you will be amazed at the high quality of the images and you will also notice that the 20D can compete with higher end Canon cameras very well. Just my opinions. Lou |

It's really simple: When choosing between the D70 and 20D, go for the 20D....
As said, quality wise, the ranking is like this: 300D - D70 - 20D I don't know if there are other factors: Do you already own a lot of Nikon or Canon equipment (lenses, flash, analog camera), Do you plan on upgrading the DSLR in the forseeable future? (and if so, would you rather get a 1Dwhatever or a D2whatever?) It's more like choosing a system than a camera then. If you're just choosing a camera: The 20D is the better, but the D70 is pretty nice as well. (And IMHO the flash metering on the Nikons still is a _lot_ beter) |

I think some people have a mind set, specially asking whether to choose Nikon or Canon. Here are a few things I tell people.
1) Which brand are you familiar with? 2) Do you already have a partial system? or starting out fresh? 3) Do you have any friends or relatives that have a system? Let me explain 1) I am not talking about brand recognition. Rather, if you have ever used a manufacture product. I originally started with a Pentax, once I got to my 3rd year in High School photography class, we were finally allow to use our own system. I chose Canon. At the time AE-1 was the hottest thing, however I couldn't afford it, so I still used Canon. Ever since I am still with Canon. Because I am comfortable with their "ergonomics" 2) If you already have a few lens and accessory from a manufacture, you might just want to go with that. Of course most people who bought in alot of stuff for a particular system will have a hard time jumping on to another system. 3) Friends and relatives are great. You can always get personal help, and borrow lens & accessories. This is a great way to try out things that you might not have. My advise, don't go overboard trying to nickpick each camera. 20d vs d70 vs 300d blah blah blah. They are all just a tool. They all will take great picture. The more you compare, the less time you are taking picture...and the more confused you'll get. Because you will be hendered by all the jargon about why your camera isn't good enough...etc...etc... Buy what you can afford, and go out and shoot. |

Looking at lenses you will buy may also help make the choice.
First, as has already been mentioned, Canon have better compatibility than Nikon across the range of lenses. Canon also appear somewhat cheaper when looking at equivalent lenses. Second, <gross generalization> Nikon make slightly better wide angle lenses, Canon make slightly better telephoto lenses. </gross generalization>. Certainly a reason why most sport and wildlife folks go for Canon. More specifically, how much do you have to spend on lenses and roughly what do you want. Both companies make some great lenses, but see if what you particularly want is in your price range and even exits. For instance Nikon don't make any Tilt and Shift lenses, and their VR (Canons IS equivalent) is available in fewer and more pricy glass.
