Have things changed that much?

I grew up in my fathers studio. He did his best to teach me the trade, but I had other interests that lead me away from the family business. Well 20 yrs later and I am starting to get the bug again. One of the most basic things he taught me about shooting nudes was how to apply make up to cover all of the little blemishes and reduce the lines caused by clothes and underware. He would usually advise his customers to show up in loose fittting clothes with nothing under. We very seldom had to retouch anything. Has Photochop ended this practice?

I think PS helps alot. Say for example, the model has a big zit on her forehead. Sure some make up will hide it but with PS, you can clone it out. PS can also smooth out the bra or underware line so that you can continue to shoot unstead of waiting for minutes to have the clothes line fade away.

Hey Friz, as you know image manipulation, retouching etc has been around a long time. But PS blows them all away. Not just retouching, but entire remodeling of an image can be done with the right skills. Color replacement, clothing replacement, hair color changes and entire BG to name just a few. Blemishes and eyeglass reflections easy peasy.

Need to enhance a bust, remove a strap, lengthen a neck or shorten a jaw line or even better enlarge and recolor eyes, add or subtract that 10lb camera fat? no worries...

It's easier and quicker to ask a model to turn up in loose clothing so that you get no bra marks than to spend even a few minutes removing them in PS, no matter how good you are at PS.

I guess I need to look at PS closer. For me there was always the satisfaction of a clean negative that we could pull a flawless print from. I guess things have changed. Thanks,

I still instruct my models to wear loose clothing with nothing underneath, and I'll use concealer to hide obvious blemishes so that I can get as much done in camera as possible. Having said that, though, I do post process all my images to make sure I correct the little details that can't be corrected before the shoot.
