Well, as seen right here on POTN, people seem to disagree.
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...d.php?t=585818 What do YOU think? Is smiling overrated?? Out of style? Does it even matter? Credit for this idea goes to Adshiso.... |

ROFL! The thread title is wrong!
SIMLES <> Smiles........ Oh, well. That means my answer is no, I don't care if the subject SIMLES. I think they look better when they smile, though. ;} |

In general I prefer a smiling subject. Some people try to pull off the I'm-too-hardcore-to-smile thing and it usually doesn't work, while it can work for others.
I still voted for #3 though |

If everyone smiled the world would be a happier place.

its hard to say.. some people just look too forced when they smile.. almost like they are uncomfortable.
i think natural smiles on the best.. but if i am taking someones photo, i wont force them to smile. so i guess its not a must. shan |

I think it depends on the shot...the mood of the shot, the mood and personality of the person....the situation...all of that.

Yes depends on the shot and the person

Hmmmmmmmm............
Results indicate most don't care about the smile, and almost as many think this is yet another stupid poll. (lol) |

isn't this answer a stickie yet?
|
I voted for the later so yeah. It really depends on what you mean a smile, what type of photography, and that not all senior portraits needs smiles. Like I said in the example thread, first pic needs something different but the second one was fine.

I often like the "Mona Lisa" look. Adds a "what is the subject thinking" dimension.

depends on the mood of the shot but I like a small smile. Does not need to be toothy.
