MKII is worth it I think - just. Especially if you use flash - since it reports distance for ETTL-II. Focus is slow as a dog but very smooth and still a lot faster than the MKI, and pretty swift if you're not going from MFD to infinity.

Also, MKIs don't come up for sale often. Heck MKIIs don't come up for sale often - I bought mine new with the rebates after 4 months of waiting for a used one to come up. It's a magical lens.

But yes, the 35L blows it out of the water. I tried one and it makes the 85L's focus speed feel pathetic. It is, however, EXTREMELY accurate.

Any flash stuff I do would probably be Vivitar 285HV's or AB800's. I think Canon and Nikon are off their bloody rockers charging what they do for flash units or maybe that's just the angry person inside of me at what Canadian retailers charge us for them lol.

Then the MK1 should be fine if you're ok with the AF speed. Both spit out the most epic images. As heavy and cumbersome as the 85L is to use, I forgive it each and every time I download the images. They're just magical . But good luck finding one!

I have the 285HV too, it's a really nice flash.

The 85L feels like a small paperweight to me I'm used to walking around a 3.9km road course for 3 consecutive days with a 40D and Sigma 120-300 2.8 on one shoulder and a 40D + 70-200 2.8 on the other with a backpack holding the rest of the gear.

I had ordered the 285HV from B&H when our dollar was better but they ran out of stock right after the Sunpak 383's got sold out. Need to get around to ordering three of them or biting the bullet on some AB's.

Pretty much why I went for the 100-400. I never used the 120-300 @ 2.8 so it really never came in handy and even on the crappier days there's enough light for AF @ 5.6. Great lens but if I am going to lug that kind of weight around all day it'll be a 500 f4 IS or a 200 f2 for night drifting.

I can just imagine the call from Visa on that one. We'll see what my bonus brings this year, I need to start working for a bank so I can get my $1million bailout bonus

Hahaha. So what do people here in Toronto (or in this thread, rather) shoot? Clearly you're a motorsport and weddings guy, shawn.

Actually I'm not even a wedding shooter I just offered to bring my camera to my girlfriend's sisters wedding and take some candid shots. The assistant to the paid photographer was just standing texting on her cell phone so I grabbed the 24-70 and 40D out of my bag and started snapping away without interfering with the paid photog.

I primarily shoot motorsports and automotive stuff, I pondered the idea of weddings but after watching my girlfriends sister turn into Bridezilla I decided I cherish my life too much.

What's your preference for shooting? I see lots of birds on flickr and lanscapes

Fashion/glamour/portraits, landscapes, birds .

I'm with you there on weddings - no matter how good I get at this, the idea of potentially messing up the most important day of two peoples' lives freaks me out.

Where's your favourite place to go to shoot wildlife and birds?

Mostly landscapes and portraits for me... I also like shooting live shows when I get the chance provided I can get up close
