I got a new laptop in August and I have not been able to get it to work with any of 5 different card readers, including a new Sandisk and a new Sony, all of which work just fine in my XP computers. The computer seems to recognize the reader in device manager, but they don't show up in the list of drives.

While I was troubleshooting, I decided to plug my few-year old Wolverine photo viewer into a USB port and the Vista equipped laptop recognized it immediately. Since then, I've been using it to transfer photos from my cards.

I found three related threads, but none really offered any information that helped me. Anyone have ideas/recommendations?

I tried a couple of expensive/branded readers and found the cheapest, nastiest, $5 no name thing I picked up in Vegas worked better than the rest.

I had the same problem, with my desktop, initially. Ended up getting a new Sandisk reader, that supports high speed/high capacity cards, and boom...it was good to go. Needless to say, it's something in Vista, that needs a hi-speed/hi-capacity card reader. Sucked, but, at least the new reader worked. :)

Anyone have any recommendations for what/where to pick up a card reader? I've become annoyed with connecting the camera to my laptop. Seems like it doesn't make a ton of difference in 'quality' for one. But other than that, I'm at a complete loss!

Any Sandisk card reader that is capable of reading SDHC cards, or fast CF cards should do the trick. If anything, when I get home, I'll post up the model number for mine...works really well with Sandisk Ex. III CF cards.

The reader I have is a Sandisk Imagemate 12 in 1 - Model Number sddr-89 v4. Of course, I'm sure there's newer ones out there...but, this one works with Vista 64-bit, so, I'm sure it'll work with ANY Vista OS.

Later.

I got it at a local Staples, for like 10 bucks...I think...about a year ago. I'm sure it's cheaper, by now.

Looks like it, penny. Though, I don't quite remember paying that much for it.

I've found that a lot of sites with retail stores will charge more online than in the store.

I hope runninman finds it at his local Staples. I intend to stop in tomorrow too.
I'lll let you know if I make it past the parking lot!!!

Strange that you've had those problems.

I've used a Sandisk Ultra II Firewire card reader (which I've had for years) as well as a new Firewire 800 Extreme IV reader and the relatively cheap multi-card reader that I installed in a front bay in my case. None of them have had any issues.

I agree, and if I didn't want to have a card reader for travel purposes, I'd keep using my Wolverine card reader. I'm somewhat skeptical that the next reader will solve the problem, but it's at least worth a shot.
