Default Successful litigation

Date line 10-29-08. District court of New York.

It was announced today that the suit filed against Canon Inc, one that had received little notice until today has been settled.

Hence forth Canon must release firmware revisions that unlock all the features of their cameras. Most impacted was the recently release 50D Camera that now is able to film HD video.

I'm wondering if this doesn't belong on the rumor thread. It doesn't sound like a likely verdict to a real lawsuit. Post the link if you have it and you'll make a believer out of me if the source is reputable. New York is a place where one might get this kind of a verdict, but on higher appeal it wouldn't surprise me if it would be overturned. Still think it's a clever(ish) concoction though. On closer look I see we "are" on the rumor thread. Thought I smelled something fishy.

this seems like a fake rumor without a link.......... otherwise this would be announced on CHDK -- http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK

they're the ones in charge of modding firmware

I’m doubting that this is true. A quick peek around google found nothing. But if this is true, it retarded. All this will do in increase prices for everyone as Canon will no longer have the option to limit features to differentiate products which today use the same platform causing them to have to develop separate platforms thus splitting their development dollars leading to poorer product for everyone.

For example, both the 50D and the new 5D are based on DigicIV. We know that DigicIV supports movies but it has probably been disabled on the 50D so that the new 5D has something to brag about. If Canon is forced to unlock this feature it could hurt 5D sales. Now when Canon develops the 6D and the 60D they will not make the same mistake and both cameras will have their own Digic processor. This splits the development pool and we will all get crappier product because of it.
