Default Bantam Girls Hockey

From last nights game. Tried some of the stuff I'd seen here on the forum. Shot from the bench.

I appreciate and welcome any and all C & C.

Hey, don't let the lack of responses get to ya. For what ever the reason, we have some people being very conservative with their comments. From my perspective, these are pretty good. Good WB and all. And at this age, it is a little hard to capture action that isn't there. It's just not the NHL, but they are still good shots.

Good shots, but they look a touch dark on my monitor.

No Exif data it seems, what were your settings and what equipment did you use?

The only other thing i can suggest is to crop on the main subjuct a little tighter.

I used my 70-200mm Sigma f2.8 lens with my Rebel XTI. Shutter was set at 1/400 and 1600 ISO. I shot them in RAW and adjusted the white balance a wee bit in Lightroom and had to move the exposure up a bit too. Not the best lit rink.
I'm going to shoot a friend's son's Midget AAA team Friday night. Hoping to get some good action shots there.
Thanks for the C & C. I really appreciate it.

Good luck with that. The action will be considerably faster and I am guessing you will not be allowed on bench unless you are a coach so you may be stuck shooting through glass. 1/400 shutter may not be fast enough or just barely and given that I don't think you can boost your ISO to 3200 on the Xti then you may be stuck with that.

If shooting through the glass, get to the end of the rink and shoot the players as they come at you...this gets them coming AT the camera instead of ACROSS the camera and you can minimize motion blur.

Also a monopod can help this too if you are not using one. Find the cleanest glass you can and get low too so that you can get good angles on faces and such.

Thanks for advice Christian. I'll take any I can get. I'm going to give it a go and see what I come up with. It's at a newer rink so the lighting isn't as bad as some I've shot in. I'll post results. Thanks again.

These look pretty good to me. I shoot a fair amount of hockey (although in older rinks with crappy lighting). If you can up the shutter speed just a bit and crop a bit tighter on the subject, I think you'll be really happy. Also, ask the coach if you can sit in the penalty box. They usually don't have glass and gets you close to the action. + you can open/close the door to help out the coaching staff at the end of a penalty. Good luck!
