Default Lens combo for airshow

Would a 400mm 5.6 L + 1.4x still Ai Servo ok on a 1D mkIII using the the center point assuming the weather is ok?

I would think that would be good if the light is good but its the UK and its cloudy quite often and dont they fly closer? So you might not even need the 1.4 on there at all.

To be honest 400mm is more than enough on 1.6x at large venues, and too big for smaller airfields such as Duxford. On 1.3x I would have thought it would be great as-is.

I just got back from Vegas where i shot Aviation Nation at Nellis on Saturday and i used my 1dmkii with 100-400 for pretty much everything. I found the range perfect for shooting the Thunderbirds in single and formation moves, the raptor, and the various other aircraft.

I think just 400 on a 1.3 would be too limiting. Maybe think about your 70-200 with convertors or borrow/rent a 100-400.
