If anyone is interested in an alternitive for a macro lens. This can be a good choice for some. Here are some example photos...

Default Re: canon 70-300 IS w/500d

My 2 favorite reasons for this 70-300 with 500d is the IS which is VERY handy with the long focal lenth of the 300 end. Also the 300 can be in focus from a long distance away which helps with bugs and such. It might be true that this combo is faster focusing than the much more exensive canon 180 L macro lens (which I read is quite slow in auto focusing)

The downside to this set up (70-300 IS and 500d) Is that it IS NOT AS SHARP as a true macro lens and has a SMALLER APATURE. The sharpness issue is not a problem just as long as the picture is properly in focus; with the addition of just a little post proccessing sharpining, the photograph will be very acceptable. The smaller apature is only a problem in low light and does not creat a situation of not enough blured background--> When the zoom is at a high mm (i.e. 300), the depth of field will be so high, you might even want to stop the apature down more than 5.6 (which is it's widest at 300)

Well that is a lot to digest... but it was fun for me. I hope it helps!
