I kinda let this slip but I have another game tonight and have not been able to get in touch with the SID all day and I'm unlikely to see him courtside. My question is an etiquette one....is it going to be bad form to shoot on camera flash from the baseline? Ambient is only 400-500 @ 1600 which sucks for D1 but it is what it is. I doubt I'll use it but just wondered what the general feeling is on doing so at that level. I'd love to setup some lights but its just not practical in an arena so its on camera or ambient.
FWIW, its Cleveland St. v Valparaiso tonight and v Butler this Thursday which should be a big one for the Vikes if they can win. |

etiquette aside, I'm not even allowed to shoot on camera flash at my D3 school, but I don't know about your situation.

You'll find that strobes in the rafters are acceptable, but on-camera flash likely will not be allowed. High ISO shooting is just a way of life for that sort of thing.

yeah, I know. I was actually hoping that they installed some permanent lights over the summer but nothing doing. I do wonder if Thursday will be better vs Butler since it's on ESPN. I have to think they'll bring in lights...

Scott, 400-500 iso 1600 is pretty workable in my opinion. All the shots on my SS page were shot this weekend at the Old Spice Classic using those settings, it was televised on ESPNU no added lights for TV, SI was there and strobed the place, but all other photogs were shooting available. Do a custom white balance and try to shoot at the peek of the action and you should have no problems. I shot a pre season game at the D1 I shoot for and a parent game down from the stand and snap a pic with the pop up flash and the ref gave that person a warning.

High ISO is your friend at indoor basketball games.
![]() This image came from a Tamron 28-300mm lens, generally recognized as too slow to be suitable for the purpose for which it was used, getting an image of a typical small gym basketball game. Bumped the ISO to 1600, set the shutter speed at 1/125, then brightened the image to compensate for the deliberate underexposure. Certainly, most people who are serious about basketball game action will have more suitable lenses and the gyms will have better lighting. If unsuitable equipment can generate adequate results, you're certain to get superior results with better equipment. |

well, they must have replaced a light or two since I was able to 500 and 1000 for the first half. I lost 2/3 the second and had to go 500/1600 but with just a touch of the Ninja, it'll be fine. I'll post some results in the photo share later on. Bummed to hear ESPNU doesn't bring in lights since that's whose got Thursday's game.
