Default Would I be wasting my time?

I love looking at all the photos here, especially the ones of the moon that for some reason I find strangely hypnotic.
I want to take a photo of the moon but I get the impression you need some pretty snazzy gear to do it.
any advice on whether I could get a half decent photo with my camera?

Hi yes you can get a good piccy with the EF 75-300mm Lens. like this one http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...d.php?t=595702
Just give it a try.
Do you have a tripod or some other way to set the camera up so it is nice and steady? Hand held you can get good results but best set up on a tripod.

also check this out as for camera settings. http://www.adidap.com/2006/12/06/moo...re-calculator/

check out some of my shots taken with a cheap 650-1300mm lens.
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...6&postcount=31
Cost about 150 euros.
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...d.php?t=599527
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...d.php?t=600906
Mostly using ISO 100, f8-11 and 1/100 - 1/125 sec.

No special equipment needed.

Start with the longest lens you've got. You'll start to get good surface detail at about 300 mm. No need for a tripod, but you can use one. Autofocus will work fine. Use low-ish ISO, maybe 200. Now, go to full manual and open the lens all the way. Shoot with progressively faster shutter speeds starting at about 1/100 and ending at about 1/1200.

Never trust your exposure meter to set shutter speed, all that black sky will fake it out and you'll get very overexposed results. The histogram on your screen will be hard to interpret becasue almost all the pixels will be black. The disk should look rather gray, not white, on the screen if your exposure is right.

Then the most important part - show us your pictures!

The thing about the moon is that it's so bright exposures are incredibly short relative other AP exposure times. No need to worry about tracking when using just your camera and lens for these.

For starfields, deep sky objects and planets, however, it's a different story. But the moon is a fun way to dip your toe in the water. You can get some good shots with basic equipment.

I got one!
No tripod, just hand held with my 400d and kit lens. I cheated, it was taken in daylight, I just darkened it to make it look like nighttime.

Looks like a winner! Of course you need to turn it upside down so we Yanks can recognize it

Don't tell anyone how easy this is.

Looks nice. Would you mind posting the un-darkened version? I'll bet that one looks great in it's own right.

I've taken so many pictures of the moon. Just can't get enough. I never remember the settings I use though. I always shoot in "M" mode (just what I've got used to) Hand held, partial metering, iso 100, wide open then play around with the shutter speed. I ignore the cameras light meter and just keep playing and chimping till it starts to look right. I think the trick is to take lots to be sure to get a keeper. I think people forget how bright the moon is and think a slower shutter is needed as it's at night. Also, don't forget that the moon is a moving target.

There's some on my Flickr page if you fancy taking a look.

this is just trimmed and sharpened a bit, no colour change, pretty much straight off the camera.
