I received an email from Canon providing an estimate to repair my lens. But here's the kicker; they did not say what the problem is but from the itemized quote (see below), which is all labor and shipping and no parts costs (it appears that they are going to just do some adjustment internally. I remember reading in a thread here that the basic charge usually starts at $114. So what repairs do you think they are going to do based on the repair quote below? I'm just curious because they are closed and I can't talk to them.
labor 95 Tax 1 Ship 18 cost 114 Thanks Al

Could be something as similar as reseating the back plate. looks like the minimum charge.
My buddy dropped his 24-105 we took off the back plate and popped the insides back in place, and fixed that quick. Sometimes trying it yourself is more cost effective. What was the problem when you sent it in? Hard to judge by price alone.

The pictures weren't as sharp as I thought they should be. And I purchase the lens used and its over 11 years old. So I thought it was in needed of a check up.

So it's probably just a calibration charge. If it wasn't broken, I doubt they are replacing anything.

I just got an email too: My calibration charge is $177.40 for the 24-70L. That's absurd. I'm officially paying more than the price of a brand new one just to get a used one that might work okay. Screw you Canon and the person I bought the lens from!

I think form is saying that he could sell his 24-70 used (for let's say $900), and buy a new one on (amazon has it currently for $1057), so the price difference is the cost of the repair, AND he'd have a new one instead of repaired one.

Sounds like somebody thinks they paid too much for a used lens... Doesn't seem like a Canon or seller issue to me.

They sent me an estimate for the repair but did not state what the repair is. It stated to accept or decline. I called the service center and ask them what it was that I was accepting or declining and was told that they should've better explain what the repair estimate represented. According to them its to open the lens and perform adjustments and recalibrations and to determine if other repair is needed. I accepted of course.

Having worked in a cleanroom environment, I think $93 is a fair charge for the service. |

Um, Al, maybe I missed something... but which of your lenses are we talking about here.
$114 would be a bit pricey to get a 50/1.8 repaired or just calibrated. But, it would be reasonable for a 300/4 IS.
