![]() Took this with a 300d and the kit lens. I think the narrow DOF gives it an interesting look.

Interesting yes, but there's the subject missing.
Setting the focus on the candies or a larger DOF would have made the subject visible. Or a small DOF with a different angle so we can see what's in the box... The orange is too dominant to leave it out, the eye is drawn to the orange but the eye can't see what the orange is... conflict... IMO of course...

An interesting coincidence...
I have a tin of Altoids Tangerine Sours sitting on the table next to me. When I checked the color in the photo against the real thing, the match is perfect. Considering all the steps that image has gone through before it hits my laptop, that's pretty amazing.

Bloo Dog,
No I don't work in ad, just a lowly programmer... Lighting was flourescent overhead (these are wide spectrum bulbs, 5500 dK) and the built in flash with a piece of broken clear cieling tile (from the overheads) used to diffuse the flash. I had taken several shots where the candy was in focus, but they were lacking some element, especially with the tin out of focus. Plus, to get the DOF to get it all in required a shutter speed that was too long for handheld. I have a good tripod now, so I might retry this shot. At the time, it was all I could do to get the most interesting shot. I like the candy out of focus. What I think I'd like to do is get a series of shots to create a composite where the tin is all completely in focus, but the candy out. I'll keep you posted on that one...this where those hours and hours of ps training come in. Thanks for the comments.

Oh yeah, and I used the "kit lens..."
I was just shopping at dell.com, and my wife said I would need a more compelling argument for buying a new laptop than "It has a 17" screen AND a DVD burner..." This might be the ticket. Seriously: I'm going to work on this "assignment" soon. I have to process about 75 shots I took of a band last night, and then I'll try to get started. Thanks for the input. ~JF
