I'm not familiar with the history of Leica but I'm guessing a body from that early is worth adding to a "serious" collection?

Maybe someone more familiar with Leica collectability can shed some light on why this model, in this condition went for so much.

I found some new models for about twice that price, so I wouldn't consider it to be that good of a deal.

That right there is my goal in life. To be rich enough to not think twice before buying an "absolutely non functional piece of ancient metal in original black paint" and be able to justify that its a collectors item.

Scratch that, shouldn't have to justify at all.

Obviously the buyer thought it was worth paying more than the estimated book price, putting into play an aspect that is very relevant to any market: at times, personal want is an entity that is more than willing to pay outside of the official book value.

Actually anymore ya need to research your goodies first...apparently the key to that body is the black as well as the serial number under 1-million. Notice the higher serial numbers sell for significantly less.

I've sold stuff over the years some people would shake their head at...but, to someone who enjoys the disease that is collecting, these pieces gave them some enjoyment. Much the way people who like video games get enjoyment out of their $50-$70/game or $1500 for a camera lens......whatever works I suppose...

Yeah, there's research and knowledge involved... of course. My comment was made tongue-in-cheek. I seriously doubt I've actually had anything valuable in my possession because I'm pretty new to the hobby and have had very few hand-me-downs.

That said, I've read many stories about people donating valuable equipment/objects because they didn't know any better. Of course, some people suspect that they have something valuable and make a different mistake altogether... this example is my favourite: http://www.newlifeauctions.com/allsopp.html
