Canon acknowledges 5D Mk II's black dot problem
At the beginning of December, users of Canon's new 5D Mark II DSLR have reported an issue with the camera, which produces very fine black dots on the right side of bright spots in images shot at night and at high ISO levels. The dots only become visible if the images are enlarged by at least 100 percent on a monitor or large-format prints are created. The problem was acknowledged by a Canon rep back on December 8th, and as of Wednesday, the company has posted a statement on its Australian support site acknowledging the problem, promising it is looking into the phenomenon to discover ways to "improve and/or mitigate" the issue, according to a Friday CNET report. Some Mark II 5D users have found a workaround to eliminate the black dots, suggesting photographers disable the highlight tone priority, lighting optimizer and noise reduction. The photographer who is believed to have shot some of the very first photos that demonstrated the issue, Stephan Horold, believes the issue stems from different optics used in the 5D Mark II, as the 1Ds Mark III DSLR uses the same sensor and does not have the black dot issue. Horold goes on to say the black dot effect gets more pronounced as ISO levels increase. Canon also announced it is looking into another 5D Mark II concern regarding vertical banding noise showing up when shooting images in sRAW1 mode. The setting produces file sizes smaller than regular RAW images. Before a definitive fix is found, Canon did suggest ways to eliminate this issue. The company gave users three suggestions that will not produce the issue. They consist of setting the recording format to RAW or JPEG instead, setting C.FN II-3 highlight tone priority to 0: Disable if shooting in sRAW1 or using sRAW2 and setting C.Fn II-3: Highlight tone priority to 0: Disable. |

Wow...
Out of all of canon's line up, a couple cameras have had a couple problems and now they can't make cameras? There don't seem to be anything wrong with my 30D, I have had since about a month after it came out. My 300D worked like it was suppost to, it was my first DSLR. My used 20D has not had any problems. My used Elan 7n has locked up on my 1 time, I had to remove the batteries and kept shooting. Not sure about anyone elses cameras... Now, I have read about the "black dot issue" and find the issue would be annoying, I don't have a 5DII, but maybe one day I will. Canon should have tested further, but you can't really test everything in every condition. Would I get a 5DmkII if I had the money right now? Probably not, not until the black-dot issue gets figured out and fixed Personaly, I think canon builds good cameras, though a lot of people think canons QC is slipping. |

I don't agree with the OP 100% but to some extent I have realized that over the years Canons quality control has dropped quite a bit. I guess it is simply the higher demand pushing Canon to produce more units. Whether it be lenses are bodies, I see more Canon products come back defective then Nikon products, not a huge difference, but noticeable.

These posts are getting boring....Any new product can have issues out of the gate...I am one of the "early adopters" of new technology. I have had a 50d ( I know its not a 5d mkII )within the first few days of release and have never had any issues. I have purchased cutting edge products that have had gremlins when received. I for one feel as long as these issues are addressed and corrected promptly I am satisfied. I am very happy with the quality of cameras they produce and hope to one day own a 5d mkII despite all the nit picking going on. If you are not happy you can always sell and goto nikon! LOL J/K (off the soap box...heheh)

Why can't people just make peace with not having 5D2.
I know you want it but for some reason don't have right now, it doesn't mean that you need to look for every new post on the Net on well known issue. I guess there will be no joy in life for these people after Canon releases next firmware.

Maybe because you would expect 4000$ body only priced camera to shoot without black dots and vertical banding?
