Default Need some help with the 430ex ii

Ok, I'm testing my new flash, here's a few sample, all the picture are taken at an exposure time of 1/160 sec, iso of 200 with a F-stop of 5,6 and the focal lenght was 18mm with the ef-s 18-55 is.

The first pic is with the flash at 75 degre, second at 60 third at 45 and the last one is with the flash pointed toward the target.

I have 8 halogen set to the maximum power in this room.

Do you have any advise about exposure time in these kind of situation and also about the iso.

It's really easy for me to take picture without the flash because with the sensor, I know what the picture will look like, but with the flash, it's a hole different ball game.

I think with the flash at 45 degre the result are good.

If you have any tips, it would be greatly appreciated because I'm going to do the christmas picture tomorrow in similar situation.

Is your flash in manual mode or eTTL mode?
Either way it really doesn't matter that much what your shutter speed is because the flash is shorter duration than 1/160th of a second.

Try this experiment:
Put flash in eTTL mode and as in your pic #4.
Take a pictures now with 1/200th, 1/160th, 1/125th.... I predict the pictures will be virtually identical in exposure.
Take pictures now with 1/160th and change ISO from 100, 200, 320, and 400. I predict the pictures will be virtually identical.

Tell me why I predict what I predict. And what do your results show you.

Well it was in eTTL and I did try with 1/20, 1/30, 1/40, 1/60, 1/100, 1/160 and 1/200 and they pretty much look the same, I didn't mess with the iso.

I guess the flash compensate with whatever exposure I set if the flash is powerfull enough to do so.

I don't know why, but some time I take a few picture from around the same place and one of them will be really daker than the others. Maybe I just have to get used to the flash.

I guess in most situation it is better to bounce from the roof.

Flash probably did not completely charge enough before that shot.

Yep, but you have no people in the photos you showed. You will probably see a bigger difference between direct flash and bounced flash when you put some people with eyes in there.
